quick question on gas

what kind of gas do you put in your bikes?

regular mid or premium?

87 octane regular and I use the "no ethanol" blend for my stockers.

How would one know if a stations gas contains ethanol or not?

I personally use the lowest grade that doesnt contain ethanol. I only put corn in my tank if I have no other choice.

At least in Michigan (I don't know if this is a state or federal requirement), if the gas contains ethanol, the pump must must be labeled as such.  You'll see a sticker on the pump indicating that the gas contains 10% ethanol.  Around here, Shell, BP and Mobil can be relied on not to contain ethanol.  You'll find the ethanol sticker on the pumps of many other brands of gas.

Its virtually impossible to avoid ethonol in the Chicago area, especially during the summer.

87 is fine.  Not a good idea to run premium in these bikes regardless of whether you think or some one else tells you they run better.  Do a search if you want more this has been thoroughly discussed before.

Well, to name just a couple:  It causes non-metallic fuel system parts to dry out, harden and shrink or crack.  It absorbs moisture which can lead to corrosion of metallic parts.

We have stations here in WI that have big signs that say "no ethanol" in any pumps. I only frequent those stations. For some reason I think people are turning away from the ethanol blends if possible.

Use something like Shell or Chevron as well. It has 5 times the EPA minimum requirement of detergent. It will keep the carbs from varnishing as fast.

The cheap gas will just have the EPA minimum.

My Venture has been a garage queen at times. I have been able to let her sit for 6-7 months without having to clean the carbs. It was 2-3 months with cheap gas.

well ill try to use some none ethanol gas stations or use shell or cheveron.....

its hard to get none ethanol gas here in MN its everywhere. i never noticed the stuff till i moved here from florida.

i always thought that put that ethanol stuff in the gas so it doesn't freeze over the winter. didnt know its bad for the motorcycle.....

Apparently millions of people have been drinking 'corn sugar' too.... due to the epidemic of obesity and diabetes... ( I'll be proved right one day  ;D :o )... 90% of everything on the shelves of my local F#&dland store contains massive amounts of HFCS.. looked at lots and lots of labels.....

I prefer BP Ultimate and in Germany Aral 100. I believe it's ethanol free and it keeps everything in the inlet tract wonderfully clean. I suppose it's like gasoline with a touch of seafoam.
In my 32 years experience these countries always had the better gasolines: Germany, Holland, Switzerland and Italy.

That's because you guys across the pond don't have the corn industry trying to make a buttload of money selling to every nook and cranny of American lives. Politics is an interesting phenomenon.

My bike ran noticeably better when I used 87 (economy) opposed to 92 or 94 (premium).

I had started using the premium when my friend said my bike would run cleaner. Well for two weeks after switching I had a rough idle and a stumble on take off. After I went back to economy the bike ran like a top.

Well here in the NY Metro area 10% ethanol is all I can get. 400 miles away on an Indian Reservation I could get leaded. Don;t think I did not think about getting some Gas cans bringing down a seasons supply.

Your friend has bought into one of the many myths that the oil companies have no reason or desire to quell.  They don't care why you buy the more expensive gas, as long as you do.
