The ugliest SOHC accessory?
« on: May 04, 2005, 02:01:53 AM »
When shopping on eBay I wonder how many different accesories were created for the CB750. In that chopping era, people was dying to customize their bikes, but some of them are, in my opinion, ugly to say the least. Or simply unuseful. Ignition relocation brackets or oil coolers are somewhat useful, as well as saddlebags, but I don't believe saddlebags match the look of the bike.

I can only give a biased opinion, because I'm against customizing (at least, against permanent customization). What is, in your opinion, the ugliest accesory for the CB saga? (You can suggest your own if it is not represented)

My vote goes for those stupid King & Queen seats.  Maybe some of our American cousins think they look cool but if you are tall they are very uncomfortable as you need a proper bench seat to slide back on!

I'll add my vote for the king/queen seat.  Not only are they damn ugly, but they're not even comfortable.  On a long ride, I need to be able to adjust my sitting position occasionally to keep my ass from going numb.  The last two bikes I bought both had king/queen seats on them, and those were the first things to go.

A close second for me would be ape-hager bars.  If you've got a chopper, and that's the look you're going for, then that's one thing.  But I've seen far too many of these on an otherwise stock bike.  Just looks silly, IMO.

That's true, ape hangers doesn't fit on SOHC. I will add it to the poll choices.

I should have taken a photo of my bike before the one I use for my avatar....:)

It had:

16" rise ape hangars
King/queen seat
a sissy bar/luggage rack that stood almost 6'5" (2 metres).

It now is stock.  While it may have been cool in the 70s...I like the
stock old school look the best.

(the seat and sissy bar is available for free if anyone wants them...:))

Would the king queen seat work to help my kids see when riding.  will you send me a photo of the seat and bar. Quails@juno.com.  I am building a chopper bicycle for my boy and that bar might be the trick I need.

Man I could vote for most of that crap but mark another one off for the big, gay king queen seats.  Those kill the looks of these bikes more than anything else.  I feel these bikes look best bare bones stock!  Full farings look absolutely rediculous on the smaller sohc4s but can look ok on the 650s and 750s if the rest of the bike is dressed to match.  As for ape hangers...WTF?...buy or make a chopper for that crap but dont put them on an otherwise stock 500-750, looks stupid, not to mention it completely throws off ones ability to enjoy the beautiful handling these bikes have to offer!

The K/Q seats look B A D! Ape hangers require a person whos knuckles drag the ground. Leather saddlebads can look OK but what is with the tassles?
I have a windjammer SS fairing and it is great. May not look quite the best but it looks better than the earlier models. Mine has trim around the headlight which looks so much better.

This makes me wish Carpy still had his "Snotters" page up. I really dug the "funeral bike!" (windshield, light bar, saddle boxes....) :P

Well that just shows you where my taste buds are, I like that seat Bobby, itd go well with my sissy bar and backrest that I bought on ebay in a moment of weakness many years ago, ha ha!

Actually I don't mind the big comfy seats and barn-door fairings, I haven't tried a king and queen seat on a 750/4 but I rode a 1975 model Goldwing with a king and queen seat and a barn door fairing and it was super-comfortable for a quick 200 mile blast.

So what do I hate? Chrome cylinder fin covers, extended forks and those horrible twisted square bar side-stands, I just can't think why anyone could imagine that they look good, but then again, I like Bobby's "Croc-Seat", ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I also Hate big fairings.

They do make the long rides a lot more comfortable, though.  I put a lot of miles on a full Vetter '82 GS1000.

Having said that, I've been trying to decide if I should put an old Vesco "Rabid Transit" on my 550F.  Think I just got tipped away from that idea.

In order of offenciveness... (i think i just made up a new word)
Ape Hangers - i think they look like crap on anything.
King / Queen Seats - see above

What about raked out / extended forks on an otherwise stock bike
WTF were they thinking?

Does Terry have a sheep skin seat cover so he feels at home?

Oh, by the way, Terry
i hear the price of sheep has gone up due to the drought
It's now about $65 per hour (ha ha)
CB750 K1 - undergoing restoration (on hold)
CB750 K2 - Wanted - More time to work on her
CB1300S - the most awesome bike i've owned yet
Z1000 1977 - Wanted - a head in rebuildable condition

Hey Brooksey, what are you doing attacking me, where do you live again, ya zoob! Ha ha, actually, I do have a sheepskin seat cover, and when I had my BMW K100RT (brilliant tourer) I slipped another inch of foam under it for the ride from Melbourne to Brisbane for a promotion course I was doing at Canungra, then back to Melbourne via Sydney, all up about 5000 Km, and at least half of it with the mother of all hangovers, ha ha! The extra foam and the sheepskin just made the trip all the more enjoyable mate, good stuff.

$65.00 per hour? Geez most of the girls in Fortitude Valley wouldn't be getting that much would they? Ha ha, Cheers, Terry. ;D

I went to an engagement party in The Valley at a Vietnamese restaurant in 1991, the food was great, there were about 100 of us army jerks there, drunk as skunks, I had a great night, finished up getting thrown out of "The Wintergarden" about 7am.

Anyway, the sun was up (as it always is in Brisbane) so I packed all my crap onto my BMW K100RT and left for Melbourne, via Sydney at around 9am. I only got as far as Newcastle that night as I was physically and mentally wrecked. I swore I'd never eat Vietnamese food again! Cheers, Terry. ;D
