Finally some progress... still a long way to go...
« on: April 28, 2006, 09:11:30 PM »
Guys,

Well I finally got around to fixing my digital camera and have taken some photos of the work in progress

As can be seen from my avatar, a long way to go...

Frame was abrasive blasted by local engineering company, unfortunately some cancer found around the swingarm pivot, but able to weld it up, I etch primed it (two coats), then sent the bottom half of the triple tree to local powder coating for a sample of their work, I was happy with the result so took the plunge and asked them to do the frame and top clamp, thats how it looks straight from the factory. The finish is like a hammer tone and has a slightly dimpled feel when running your fingers over it.
All up the blast, weld, powder coat - total of $170.00 $AUS...
Colour is called GREY SPANGLE.

Wiill post more at the next milestone..

I'm starting to see some light at the end of the dark tunnel.. ;D ;D

Looks awesome!   8)  Keep the photo's coming.  Let us know how the powdercoating job was done...did the coating interfere with the tapped holes and bearing areas, and how you deal with that.

Powder coating was completed at a local firm...they wiped over the frame with some turpentine and let it sit for a few hours in their hot factory, then sprayed with the paint, then baked it at whatever temp for an hour..

there was one section of the frame underneath that leaked a bit of boiled grease out of a welded seam, but could not be helped - the grease had accumulated inside the frame over the last 30 odd years.

I got away with the steering head bearing by leaving the old seats in place then knocking them out this morning... took a little bit of time, but no damage to the finish.

The other main area for the triple tree, just tape up external threads, and others I just put some old bolts in where the normal stuff goes.

They also taped up the shock mounts, I plugged the oil tank mount bolts - they forgot to tape the seat mounts- but they will clean up with a wire wheel on the drill.

Pressing on the new bottom bearing was tight, but went on fine..

mainly cleaning up the fork mounts will require some emery paper work and a bit of time..

thanks for the comments

How do they prevent the frame's serial number tag from getting covered?  I am considering powder coat for my frame..

Placed some protective tape over the frame number before coating, it fell off or was removed when they coated it, and now I have to wire wheel the area to show up the number ( and I will coat it in clear). You can still see it, but with a bit of difficulty.

Thanks proteal55, nice to get a compliment from an expert
