Spirit 750 street tracker, SO MUCH FUN!!!
« on: July 14, 2011, 02:21:06 AM »
Hello all! Just wanted to ask a few quick questions, for my latest incarnation of my bike!

I have a 2010 r6 front end (everything!) and I want to put it on the spirit. I haven't done any disassembly on the spirit yet, so I'm not 100% on how everything will work out dimension wise. Im not worried about the bearings, all balls has those covered. I'm wondering if anyone knows about a way to raise the suspension on an inverted front end like that without negating it's handling characteristics...

Also, I'm going to switch to a monoshock rear end. Add shock mounts to the rear boxed frame section, reinforce the swingarm and hopefully everything will be ok! I don't want to use anything fancy on the rear end geometry wise, just a decent adjustable shock to compliment the grit setup!!

Add some dirt bike bars, rearsets, high pipes and a tracker tail section, I should be ready to rock!! Thoughts please!!

Ok, problems seem to be arising from the changes in frame geometry.  By raisin the rear end, I'll reduce my trail some.  But the biggest hurdle will be making sure the trail is proper for the front end.

The r6 is slightly shorter than the spirits, I think.  I'll know once I attempt to swap the front ends, but I'm just wondering what everyone's ideas are for increasing trail on a bike.  I'm having troubles finding some fork extensions (50mm or so) and I could also run a taller tire.

I'd love to have as much ground clearance as possible for handling characteristics, so this is important to get right!!

Raising the front is one way to increase trail, but you could also lower the rear with shorter shocks, a lower aspect tire, or a smaller diameter tire.

ya, i considered that too, but i think the trail would just change too much frankly...  as killer as it would have been to have twin floating discs, i'm going to stick with spoke wheels, and i'll upgrade the front brake to a full EBC floating setup.  that will give me plenty of stopping power up there.  i'll also do a racetech front end on it, and probably put the stock fork brace on with a small fender to help keep things stiff!

i've been talking to a guy on another forum, and he said that with a gt650 or vt1100 carb swap, i could pick up a good bit of power.  like 130 in 4th gear!  (granted he had cams and pistons, which i plan on eventually as well!)

i will def. throw a monoshock on the rear though.  reinforce the swingarm, add a top mount to the rear framerail and rebuild the subframe to accept a seat and sit higher.  all in all, should be a VERY fun bike!

i remember seeing that thread.  thanks for re-posting it.  spirit will get some work started "soon".  it's all so relative at this point anyways, with school trying to finish up and the job search going on.  funds are practically non-existent nowadays...

WHY would you change to a monoshock rear swing arm? It is harder to work on.
It is more expensive. The two shock set up is easy to work on and you can get shocks much less expensively. Then you will have to redesign the frame AND the swing arm to take the single point load. Makes no sense.

Raising the FRONT will increase the rake. Lowering the REAR will increase the rake.
But not by very much. 1ยบ maybe. Nothing.  Trail will increase a little, not much.

i want the monoshock because it's unique and i can get the shock for free from a 2010 r6, so it should be more than adequate of handling the suspension loads.

engineering it won't be too terribly difficult, i've already looked into it.  i can add a reinforcement plate to the swingarm, and on the rear downard framerail i can add the top mount rather easily too.

suspension should be just fine, and the rear end will stay super clean, again making for quite a unique build!

That yamaha R6 front triple trees have less offset so it will have less leverage when you turn. Why do you think they had to have a steering damper on all those sport bikes?
Very little rake and not much trail.

I would leave it alone.
Work on more important stuff.
It is NOT a sport bike.
You cannot make it a sport bike just because you add a Yamaha R6 front end.

Just spray paint some of your parts gold and you will feel better right away.
Use the gold CARB paint from Eastwood so it does not look like cheap gold spray paint.
Your friends will think you are still all right.

You got carbon things-CHECK,you got gold anodized looking stuff- CHECK, You got stickers and decals- CHECK. LOL....LOL

Haha, ya I gave up on the sport bile front end, I'm just going to give the front end a full racetech treatment and the rear end either a modern sport bike monoshock (free+fab work) or some ikon shocks.  If I go the latter route, it'll be an identical setup as the CB! :)

Ok, here's my Rearsets.  First picture is of version 1 using the adjustable mounts, but I didn't like it, so I redid it in a stronger and simpler way, which are the other 3 pictures.

No, routing things is easy when you don't have a sprocket cover or care about things being super hidden!!  Lemme know what y'all think!

sorry i haven't posted any new updates, i need to get some on here.  got the subframe fabbed up, seat mounted, exhaust sorted out, longer shocks installed, etc, etc.

now need to search for a possible air/vac leak in the intake and then take it to the dyno to get it dialed in.  it sounds MEAN, and is a lot of fun to throw around!!  it's really cool too, because there isn't another honda cruiser around that's built like this!  (at least not that i've seen locally or on the net, which doesn't mean they don't exist)

either way, pictures to come soon, along with some updated sound clips!

ok, here's some low-res pictures from this morning (phone reverted back to 640x480 for some reason).  i snapped them on my way to work, so let me know what you think!  it's close, i just have to find the time now dangit!!  i dunno what color to paint it...  i'm thinking of going with line-x as i have some at home that lays down really well and looks really good if you get the mix right (i'll keep the texture to a minimum).  it would help reinforce the fiberglass seat pan as well, and it would really help cover up the small bodywork issues i have on the tank.

now, what color for the wheels eventually??  gold, red/black and white have all crossed my mind at times, hard to make a decision!!

Personally I like the wheels as they are, black with the red pinstripe. Like the wheels on the '80's Harley XR1000.

That is a badass looking bike. Nice work.

ya, the black on red is def. a heavy hitter on the color schemes, i was just tossing around other ideas.

now for the paint, what do y'all think about line-x (technical Raptor liner)?  i can vary the mixture to get a lighter texture if needed, but its a good looking finish and color (black), and it would be very tough.  it would fill in any body problems and stiffen the fiberglass seat a little more.

really leaning towards the carbon fiber one because of it's superior low heat transfer.  the first one is made of stainless, but looks pretty cool too.  thoughts??
