Fork parts compatability
« on: July 18, 2011, 09:12:50 PM »
I'd like to install dual discs on my girls 71 450 but the fork lowers won't accommodate an easy install like our SOHC bikes. Can anyone tell me if the 74 CB550 lowers are compatible with the 450 tubes?

I'm going to guess no. Are you looking to go from drum to disk? I would bet that a full 350/400/500/550 assembly, including the trees, would bolt right up and get you the disk you are looking for.

EDIT: OK, need to read closer. Anyway, if the fork lowers don't work, you should be able to swap in the entire 550 front end.

You have 35mm fork tubes, correct?  If so, you shouldn't even need new triples as the 500/550 forks are 35mm.

The tubes are 35mm on both sets of forks, but the 550 tubes are rusty- hence the idea of using the 450 tubes with the 550 lowers and calipers. I'm trying to research this because I KNOW that she'll decide to go for a ride the very minute I dismantle her forks ;)

Why the upgrade? I'm a 230 pound guy and I don't really feel like there is insufficient stopping power on my single disk 550.

Hell, my Enfield had a drum brake and I was able to stop fine.

The part number for the CB450K3 tubes are different than the CB500 and CB550 numbers, so I'd say they are not compatible.  And on the fiche they look very different internally.

You could start collecting 500 or 550 parts for a dual disk setup.  Make a list of everything you need and just start hunting.  A little bit here and a little bit there, before you know it you'll have it all and you won't have to incur any wrath for disabling her bike.

It's the bit of added stopping power, and some cool factor thrown in. Yeah, the wrath... I'm a lucky guy in that dinner and a sunset ride is one of our favorite dates. Don't wanna mess with that. I've got a dual disc wheel w/ rotors, calipers, arms, fork lowers, and MC. Only lacking rebuild kits, tubes and flexible lines.
