Replaceing a side panel peg ??

I have a peg missing from a side panel. Has anyone tried to manufacture one of the pegs (retainers) from something else? If so what material did you use?

Just for future reference: 1/2 inch dowel and JB Weld. This particular peg has one side flat rather than completely round like the other two.
