Type of camera used for bike rides
« on: July 15, 2011, 03:40:20 PM »
I am looking to record some rides of mine. Why type of camera do you use and how do you mount it to your bike?

I have used several different basic point-and-shoot digital cameras to take ride videos with good results.  The only camera that didn't work for this purpose was a Kodak Z1285.  It took great video for short rides, but the first attempt at a long ride and it broke.  Probably couldn't handle the vibration.

I've used two different mounting methods that both work well.  First was a plastic clamp meant to hold a reflector on bicycle handlebars.  Camera was mounted to a screw that fit the tripod hole on the bottom and the screw was what held the clamp in place.  The second method was a longer screw through the left side turn signal clamp and screwed into the tripod hole.

That's a small section of rubber fuel line between the camera and turn signal housing to avoid buzzing.

I like that! Simple.  Hows does it work?
I have that same camera.

I have that same camera.

The mount worked really well.  It was just luck that the thread size and pitch for the turn signal clamp bolt and the standard tripod mount are the same.  That camera took good, steady video, but it was a little buzzy (possibly from the lens cover rattling in its housing).  I like the mount using the bicycle reflector holder better, because it's easier to reach.

My buddy, Heffay, uses a camera pouch with a hole cut for the lens and velcro straps to hold a camera to the chin bar of his helmet.  He's gotten some really good video with that simple set-up.
