even when the ignition is turned off? (what I mean in the title is that if you bridge the contact 'accidentally' between the main fuse holder and the headlight, the headlight turns on)

what does this mean about my wiring? I was going to add my own switch (as posted in another topic.. im really sorry for spamming here). All the controls work too.. this has me excited that I can maybe find a way to keep the controls functional even if I am adding some wire somewhere.

no, actually, thats normal, you can actually bypass the ignition that way if im thinking correctly.   people have done this to steal bikes.
If you take out the front fuse and wedge it between the other two fuses you can hit the start button and drive off.   Not a bad reason to have a secret switch on some of these bikes.

interesting thanks, good to know if i loose my keys ..

what do you think this means about the wiring for my headlight? if it doesnt come on normally but will like this? What did I mess up when I was hooking up the wires (headlight on/off and hi/low button work with the fuses bridged). Maybe there is only one wire going into the harness that I didnt hook up right... and maybe somehow I can figure out what color its supposed to be? and either plug it in correctly or manually run a wire somewhere.

Im going to dive into the manual a bit and see what I can figure out

(and this is all for a 1975 550f)

i cant make sense of these wiring diagrams, not only do they lack detail when it comes to the handlebar controls (and the resolution of the service manual online here prevents you from reading) but with the amended bits for the 550f controls and the fact that my right hand control may have been replaced with one that includes a headlight on/off switch...  im lost to say the least

thinking about it more, given that the light gets power when the circuit breaker is bridged then maybe its the wire going to the ignition from the headlight that is 'off' ?

Normal.... and if h/l will work with a 'jumper' from the Main fuse then your  h/l fuse is bad, or the Brown wire is not connected in the h/l bucket. The fuse may 'look' o.k. but be broken under the cap, A good time to change the fuses and shine-up the fuseholders. 15A main; 7A headlight; 5A Taillight.... good luck.
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

Thank you much for the help, I have already shiny-ed up the fuse block and thrown in some fresh fuses.

So I'm looking for the brown wire from the LH controls, to be not wired correctly.. I'll poke at it some more thanks again!

Checking over the wiring again and it really seems everything is either matched or when I unplug it to test I see that its doing something.

There is one black wire coming from the RH controls that doesn't seem to do anything (even tested the kill switch) but that's it? Or could that be it? Though I can't see where I would plug it that wasn't  obvious.

some of the black wires plug into a multi plug off the main wiring harness.

Assuming your talking about your CB550, here is a nice color coded schematic.

Thanks again, this diagram makes alot more sense (and a good night sleep helped to). I'm at work but just looking at the diagram it looks like the red/brown might be my problem
