master cylinder issue
« on: April 29, 2006, 07:51:01 PM »
fluid is not passing from the master cylinder to the brake line.  MC plunger moves freely.  Air is bleed from MC.  There are 2 holes in the bottom of the reservior and only 1 is open, the 1 closest to the line seems to be plugged solid like it never really connected to anything.  Also read that fluid would shoot into the air if lever was moved to rapidly with MC cap off, this doesnt happen.   Any ideas?

If the lever is moving freely you still have air in your system assuming of course the
master cylinder piston is intact..  One of the holes is so tiny it will appear to be
plugged and may not be. I suggest you revisit bleeding the system.  There have
been numerous posts on the subject.

Good luck,

Jim

The hole closest to the brake line is the tiny one. The actual hole is in the middle of the much larger divot that you are seeing. I had a heck of a time unplugging mine on my 350f, I finally used the very sharp tip of a drywall screw. when it's unplugged, fluid will indeed squirt up from it when the lever is pulled untill the piston blocks it off.

I used a strand from a length of electrical cable. Being
copper, it won't expand the tiny hole.  Can't afford to
break it off in the hole though.  ::)

I've used an old piece of electric guitar string to clean the MC hole out.  The g-string was the perfect size: small enough to fit in the hole, yet stiff enough that you could really jam at it.

well thats what I've decided to do, besides it sounds like a real pain to try a rebuild.  Worth a few extra dollars not to get frustrated.

well I rebuilt the old MC while waiting on a new one.  Bleed brakes, put on new pads, but the system will not release pressure once you let off the hand lever.  Front brake stays locked and brake light stays on until you release pressure from the bleed valve.   What am I missing here?

From you last post it really does sound like you have a hose problem.  The fluid will go through a crack in the inner liner and "balloon inside the line acting like a 1 way check valve. I have a hose if you want to give that a try.  Copperhorse18@juno.com

You can eliminate the hoses easily.  After the next lockup, just loosen
the banjo bolt at the master cylinder instead of loosening the bleed valve.
If they release, you are back to a master cylinder problem.

Tecky is correct, but don't do this while riding ;)
