bike just shut off middle of ride

ok all, i know I've been having issues with the charging system, since I have to charge my battery every 3-4 rides. but I have never had t his happen. the bike just randomly shut off and wouldnt restart, when I tried to restart I got the  usual dimming of lights and couldnt turn it over/start. I am assuming this was because I was running the headlight and I didnt charge battery for a few rides.. any body have any suggestions? I'll have numbers later regarding power out put and such.. I am thinking it could be the reg/rect and battery. its a 75 cb750k.

My stator was shot on my KZ and after a 160 mile trek the bike shut off at a four way. I bought a new stator cover with stator for 28 bucks rather then purchase a new stator separately. Bike has never had an issue again... 8)

Check your stator. Mine was bad on my 350F.

Check your stator. Mine was bad on my 350F.

How do you know if its shot? I apologize for my ignorance.  and you think its a stator problem, instead of the reg/rect?

When I removed the stator cover, I was able to see the brown glue looking substance was chared black... Since the stator was bad, i had to charge my battery after every ride. It would not hodl a charge.

The charging system on a CB750K5 ( and all the 750 SOHC bikes ) is robust and a failed stator probably would be the last thing to cause your bike not to charge. The only way  to know what is wrong is to do some tests. The simplest test is to attach a voltmeter to the battery and see if the voltage rises as you rev. the bike to 3 or 4 krpm.

BTW... starting-out with a 'full' battery, your bike will run for at least an hour without the alternator working until the voltage drops below a level that will make a spark happen and the bike will stop suddenly  ;)

interesting.. I know it probably wasnt a 'full' battery but shoot, I think I got 5-10 mins down the road, 15 mins max and it shut off on me ,, haha
oh and yes, I will be getting numbers... after the battery gets charged again.. or when I purchase an agm..

My 400F shut down this morning at the end of my street - turns out a fold in my jeans leg flicked the choke full on whilst I was moving about on the seat at the start of the ride!

i think if your charging fails the battery will go slowly flat,itll get to the point where the spark is weak and itll coast along ok but start to miss fire under any load,,it wont die dead stop,itll be hesitating a little while before it does die.

This is a very good section of this web site read all of them. The one by Harry could not explain the charging test any better. If you truly want to know how your bike works read all the FAQ and Tips & Tricks I could read this stuff all day long ( and have) better than TV or X-Box IMHO.

+1 on what Spanner 1 wrote. Do the test
Also letting your battery run down too low then recharging can screw up the battery they are not deep-cycle. Fix the problem before spending good money on the AGM or at least keep it charged. Read some of TTs stuff he helped me a lot when selecting my battery & charger.

found out the problem.. the ground is fried from rectifier up into harness.. I have to buy new harness and rect. and might as well regulator... :( dang po...

I have the same model bike as yours, and I've also had charging problem. It would start missing, then die in the middle of a ride. I think I am finally over it (after replacing an AGM battery that I killed too!) Here's what I did:

I went with a new harness from Parts 'N More.

I still had problems after this, due to the poor condition of the connectors on the rest of the bike. I tried my best to clean all the female terminals, but the corrosion was so bad on the connection from the alternator that it overheated and melted it, as you can see here. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=90323.msg1010735#msg1010735 .  I kludged something together with oversized bullet connectors and electrical tape to get me going, and eventually replaced the OEM style plastic connector with one from Oregon Motorcycle Parts.

Since I was already getting something from OMP, I bought a few packs of new terminals and replaced all of the corroded ends on connections from the rectifier, alternator, ignition switch, and fuse box. I also picked up an ATO/ATC style fuse box. Now, the system works beautifully. Headlight seems brighter, engine feels stronger, and my breakfast even tastes better.

Before you spend a bunch of money on a new reg/rec, do the tests as found in the FAQ section. They might be fine.

I really dont want to get a new harness, I found out that I wont need to replace the whole thing, just one ground line.. I believe the only problem I was having dealt with the rectifier, it was fried from connection to the harness.. it was pretty bad. if i have any problems after then I might have to..
