cb550f and later 550 clutch plate b?
« on: July 14, 2011, 01:25:26 PM »
What is the function of this one steel plate in these clutches?  I mean the plate that looks like two plates riveted together that fits in the middle of the clutch pack.  Number 7 in the diagram:

7. PLATE B, CLUTCH
22322-390-000
The reason I ask is that mine is feeling kind of loose.  I can squeeze it and feel some play there, like it's not nice and solidly riveted anymore?  Make sense?
Is this something I need to worry about?  I bought all new clutch components for my project but this one plate was unavailable.  I'd like to use it if possible, but I don't want to put in a broken part!
I saw a reference to its purpose being to minimize clutch rattle.  Would this mean that I could omit it for another normal steel plate (like the earlier CB550s had)?

Now I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't omit the double plate in favor of another disc and plate.  I've seen a couple of references to doing this on the forums.
Since I don't really trust the plate I have and don't want to search ebay for a better one, does anybody have any recommendations on another configuration using stock style plates and discs?  Or should I just not worry so much and use the double plate I've got?  I'm pretty conflicted here and all of these little problems that keep coming up are furthering my next ride  :P
