hey gang, have some questions for you all. i did a couple searches on the forum but didnt find much, and the FAQs have some how-to's on wheels, but not where to order (i did check the online stores list, didnt see much for wheels) or what parts are compatible for which years/models.

so...

i currently have a 16" wheel on my 1976 cb750 k6 (rear drum), and would like to pop an 18" (spoked) on it. my questions:

--are there any websites online that have (or specialize in) new wheels/rims?
--would my local dealer be able to order the honda parts if i give them microfiche numbers? (i have no idea if dealers can do such things.)
--if i get a spoke kit, would i be able to put the 16" hub/drum/etc into an 18" rim and save some money?
--are any other years/models rear wheel (drum, spoked) compatible with the '76 750?
--anyone want to trade an 18" rear spoked wheel for a pretty clean 16" one (still has a good tire, too)? :)

apologies for so many questions, and thanks in advance for the help. :)

Look here: http://www.buchananspokes.net/, They are a better source than the dealer I think.

You can send them your existing hub and they will lace up an 18' rim.

You can also check the parts for sale section of the board to see if someone has a wheel to sell (I'm sure someone does) or you could pick one up from eBay.

consider using either GL1000 or CB750A rims if you are going to go through all the trouble of re-lacing. They are 17" in the rear but are aluminum and weigh much less. Do a search on it here and you should get all the info you need

If you go from a 16" wheel to an 18" wheel, you will need new spokes as well.

Pretty sure the drums are all the same 69 - 77 or 78 ?  So, pretty much any rear wheel in that range would work for you.

You can usually pick up an entire wheel/drum off ebay.  Going rate seems to be around $50

Brand new chrome rims (factory style steel) show up on ebay all the time for about $100.  Spoke kits $30 - $100 depending on if they are stainless
or factory type.

Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

psssst.   i am looking for a 16in rear wheel for my 76cb750k, as my front and rear existing rims are fully toasted on this heap, and thought i'd go for the "look" of the fatty out back.  must be in pretty nice shape with no rust/runout, rim only is needed.  i'll pick up a spoke kit somewhere.  have paypal, in vt.

edit:  suppose we could do a swap of some sort, i could send you my hub and you send me the hub/wheel/tire?

thanks for all the info guys.

yeah, im probably going to scour ebay for the next couple months and try to score one. (seems like folks like to list wheels for $20 but put the shipping at $60? is that normal??)

steam-powered man:
the hub i currently have is in great shape, i basically need everything else, so unfortunately the trade wouldnt work for me. :/ that said, if i do get a new wheel and no longer need my hub, i'll certainly keep you in mind. if you would, send me a PM as a reminder. :) (i also have a parts bike, not sure what the size of the wheels are since i havent checked, but it's a bit of a rustbucket so you probably wouldnt be interested.)

Just for a price reference for you my local Honda dealer has the OEM rim for $128.77. Lots of them out there on the secondary market though,E-bay,Craigs,etc. Look for a wheel on E-bay that does not get a bid and contact the seller and see if he will just sell the rim cheaper, and maybe save on shipping, takes 5 minutes to remove from hub with some bolt cutters  ;)

I wouldn't be surprised at hefty shipping. The stock rear wheel is pretty heavy and will have to fit in a fairly large box.

im hoping not to have to resort to that, mostly since i'd have to get someone else to lace them, which im sure would be $100 or more. but that is definitely a viable option if it comes to it.

sounds like i will be an ebay vulture for the while. :)

Give this guy a call, he has several SOHC4's of various sizes in his yard. I bought some parts for my FJ from him a couple years ago and he was very reasonable: www.motolane.com

Z1enterprises has the correct size stock steel wheels. You have to look under the kz900/kz1000/z1 section but he has the 19x1.85 front and 18x2.15 in 40 spoke pattern for 92.50 and 115.50, respectively.

Oh, and if you need reasonably priced spoke sets, Partsnmore has front and rears for 30 each. Essentially, you could have a brand new stock wheelset for about 300.

i cannot say enough good things about z1enterprises. tons of parts, good prices, and by far the most friendly and knowledgeable staff for an online retailer ive ever had the pleasure of doing business with. i would tip them if i could! :)
