Oh and I should define: an "anthem" would be 6 minutes plus in length, the longer the better, with at least a 2 minute instrumental. Shorter exceptions exist like "the thrill is gone" don't quite make the time limit, but are anthems none the less.

O.K. Ron, I've been thinking about this.  I think I have one that fits your definition pretty well....the band "Wilco".  I would describe the band overall as slightly throwback, yet modern.....sometimes experimental....and very musical.  You will commonly find songs 5 minutes or longer that contain instrument solos on their albums.  When listening, it's quite apparent that the songs were written for the sake of the musical experience and the meaning behind the lyrics and not necessarily for radio play.....although they do get some play time on more indie-type stations (like WTTS 92.3 here in Indpls).

A good example is one of my Wilco favorites..."Impossible Germany".  Listen for the guitar solo/instrumental @ around 3 minutes....

Wilco - Impossible Germany - Lowlands 2009

IMO, quality music is still alive and there are still some "anthems".  Just like back in the 60s and 70s (there was alot of really horrid pop music back then too), you have to dig deep....just maybe a little deeper nowadays.

I would also add that I think there is actually a resurgence of this type of quality music going on in recent years.  With many artists producing their own recordings and cutting out the big recording companies all together, relying on internet sales and word-of-mouth marketing....many quality singer/songwriter artists are becoming more and more popular and successful.  Although they may not have any anthems, per se, a couple artists that come to mind are Bon Iver, City and Colour, etc....great musicians that write songs because they feel they should be written...not because it will put them on the charts.

dont be too quick to dismiss new genres of music to be worthless.... you know like your parents did with Zeppelin, The Doors, Dylan, Hendrix...
"kids" are experiencing a different version of society than you might have, and are inclined to express it as differently as such....

I think a lot of todays so called music is absolute crap.... I am a musician and have a diploma in music, when doing my diploma we were asked to create music for rap, dance and other similar types of music as a project. I was able to completely finish most of the tracks in one day without touching an instrument, and this is where today's music leaves me cold. There are piles of people making millions out of this industry without an ounce of talent, and without the ability to read, write or even play an instrument. I won't go on about it but music played by talented musicians is slowly disappearing from the mainstream and i think its a crying shame.....

Gotta say the Fish Cheer may be the only time in history when 500,000 people all dropped the F bomb at the same time.  How can you get more "anthem" than that? ;D

to play devils advocate this is the same argument was used against instruments which were created to mimic the human voice. at the time they were considered to be a cheap immitation of "real" music

Paul McCartney also was a rather poor reader/writer of sheet music...

not saying i put all of my faith in this arguement, but grain of salt...

I am also an extremely poor reader of sheet music {never used it until getting diploma} and have never even used tab, all self taught, never even had a lesson, but it never stopped me or Paul Mc or most of the early Blues and jazz greats from writing or creating music meant for instruments.

I stand by my original post mate, i get a lump in my throat and even teary eyed sometimes when something comes together well, it comes from within, computerised music is emotionless, cold, mass produced rubbish that cheapens the whole industry.....
