Godzillas Planned Oz Route - Decisions, Decisions.
« on: July 20, 2011, 04:39:20 AM »
My first thoughts about this was for GZ to land in Melbourne after Hush & Scunny & the boys had finished with the NZ leg.

Melbourne being the closest, and I know that Terry would love to take him out and run amock as part of the induction.
Problem being is that I don't know how we'd raise the bail money with the pair of these lads at large.   8)

I'm just after some different ideas at the moment, and was thinking that if GZ landed in Darwin from NZ, he could be sent on his way, either east or west from here to do the lap of Oz, finish up back in Darwin and then depart for the Europe/Great Britain leg.

Hit me with some ideas men.

Mick

I don't suppose it really matters which way around he goes, but maybe we should consider leaving him on busses or planes for the least amount of time as possible. Does GZ have feelings? I don't want him feelin' lonely.
Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators.
We haven't met yet.

That's all very well and yes it'd be good to have him on bikes all the time, but there's some long hauls involved - the east coast can probably be done by bike/car, but I don't know if we would have anybody that can get him across the Nullabor? Or down the centre for that matter. So the poor little bugga will get a bit lonely on some of those long bus/train hauls. Perhaps there should be a Mrs GZ accompanying him - nah, that'd be disastrous, she'd want to go one way and he the other, then there'd be fights, break ups, divorce.......mmm, sounds familiar. ::)

If he was in PI at motogp time, I could bring him back to my area (in a car but, sorry) and then run him up to Adelaide on the bike, but that would mean he would have to travel from Darwin clockwise. But then I s'pose it doesn't have to be a "lap" as such, if there's a bit of criss-crossing and back-tracking it wouldn't hurt?

It's hard to make any plans without knowing when he will actually arrive in Oz - if we could get a handle on that then we could plan. I don't know if that's possible though...

It's a shame that GZ won't be here soon.
I reckon that he'd like to do a bit of rock'n & rollin with Barnsey & Mossey & the boys.

As you said Pete, it is hard to make any plans just at the moment.

Ha, I know where you'll be on Oct 23rd, and I know where I'll be on Nov 29th,  8)
I saw them at the Hobart Ent Centre a few years ago (the news here says they haven't toured for 30yrs but that's crap, I saw them 5or6yrs ago) - sensational, and still sounded the same as when I used to see them at the Largs etc.
Bit different now that Prestwich has died. Bot Mossy's still got it. 8)

I can remember the Largs Pier Hotel days and watching some great bands playing there back in the 70's and then riding the Honda 4 home along Port Road freezin' friggen cold.

The Pooraka pub was another haunt back in those days with some of the bands who played there going big time in the Aust music industry.

Gee, I'd do it all again tomorrow if I could.

Back to Cold Chisel, the rumour circulating here at the moment, is that Barnsey is moving to Darwin to live.

That's just what I've heard.  ;)

Way off topic, but hey.......mate, we must have been parked next to each other I reckon, how funny is that.... :o What is scary is how I ever made it home in one piece and with a license!! Damn, the bundy tasted good back then :-[
I never hung out at the pooraka though - too rough for me, hehe. You must have been way tougher than me.... ;)

Hey if he's going to darwin to live, maybe he could take up GZ for us.....there ya go, back on topic... ;D

Mick, the fact that you are the co-ordinator of the Australian leg it may be best that GZ starts and finishes in Darwin. It would mean that you would be able to get him started on his way and then see him off at the end. I suggest that the rally goes anti-clockwise because I think that you would have a tail wind more often than not. Many years ago a friend of mine road his push bike around Austarlia clockwise and he did that "just to make it harder" - his words not mine. Have you any idea of when the rally will take place? Do we know if we have enough riders? Do you need some ideas on the which route to take? Regards, Pat

Hi Pat

I agree with you that Darwin would be the best starting and finishing point.
It makes sense to me to do it this way.

As far as GZ getting from the NT to the next point, I can't see how that can be done except by some other form of transport.
Aust Post or something along those lines.
This will also have to be the case each way when the WA section is slotted in.

None of us have any idea at the moment when the rally will take place here which puts a bit of a mocca on the planning, but we'll just have to cross that bridge when the time comes.

Here is a list of riders/participants in their respective states that we have so far.
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=92690.0
Hopefully this can be added to.

I would like to leave it to the guys in each state to make their own decisions as to where and when that section takes place, keeping in mind that everybody has their own set of circumstances.
Terry suggested that each state have their own coordinator and I think that is a good idea.
Once again I would like to leave that decision up to the guys  in each state.

I know that we can work this out objectively because we have a group of guys here who all want to be part of a team.

To your friend who rode a pushbike around Australia, I take my hat off to him.
That is a mighty fine effort.

Mick

Howdy Pete and Larry

I haven't heard anymore myself about GZ's arrival down our way.

Jerry mentioned that he sort of expected that to happen later on this year so I guess that all we can do is play it by ear.

All we can do is take it as it comes.

From what I understand, there are no deadlines or hard and fast rules to meet (time wise) with this relay, so we'll just do what we have to do when the time comes along.

There is the European leg to be organised after we've done our tour of duty with the lizard.

At least the beer supply is still good here while GZ stays there terrorising the Northern Hemisphere.  ;)  8)

That's fine mate. Just thinking ahead, but being only 6 or so weeks away to GP I guessed I wouldn't see it there.

I was going to try and get a pic with it with Stoner when we do a pit walk, but I'll just have to try Adriana instead, so to speak. ;D

Hey mates (I find that term strange to use in the US  ;) )

Godzilla is on his final North American leg. I'm thinking that Ofreen will be on the move in a few days and tearing up the Pacific Northwest region. He is a true rider and wastes no time! He should have GZ to Oregon in a few days once they meet again. After Ofreen turns him loose I can't be sure of the events. Follow that on Team Pacific Northwest. Hopefully he'll move swiftly across the US Rocky Mountains then into the Canadian Rockies as we'll begin to see the potential for mountain snowfall once again. I camped in the mountains Sat night and the overnight temp was below freezing. I'm hoping we'll be done within a few weeks. I'm thinking that as our seasonal weather heads downhill you guys/mates should be beginning to have really nice riding weather now?? Once Team PNW completes GZ's journey in Vancouver, BC, Canada we'll ship him to Team Kiwi. Now that's where you'll have to light the fire  ;D

If you guys get GZ in NZ by 10/1 will that give NZ and OZ plenty of time to do both countries before your weather turns bad once again? What would be the theoretical latest start you guys could do in NZ to have proper seasonal riding weather to complete both countries?

Thanks Larry

We can sort out the where and when after you guys have finished the NZ section mate.

From around Sept/Oct through until about April, the tropical Wet Season kicks in up north here in Darwin while the weather in the southern part of Oz should be good for riding.

I think that the best we can do is to plan GZ's itinerany around the weather patterns at the time.

Jerry, I've got an old Oz road atlas (a normal size book) that I can send to you to keep if you like, so that you can follow our little buddy/cobber/mate lizard's ventures while he's down this way.

Mick,

Thanks for the offer but the postal services would rape us when I can do a Google map, etc for nothing. I forwarded some stuff to Terry. $100+ postage for $60 of parts.
