Starter clutch removal, pins in wrong place!
« on: April 09, 2014, 01:46:28 PM »
Picked up an '81 650 with 12k miles on it that's pretty much been sitting since '89. Trying to remove the starter clutch from the underside, and the hub has some significant detents next to the holes where the pins are stuck, and now the Torx bolts don't line up with the hub to remove it.

Anyone have any advice before I take a big hammer to it? Do these pins move individually or all at once? Pics below.

Cross referenced this part to an ATC125 and bought on ebay. Less than half for one listed as a 650 part.

Turns out the clutch hub is two pieces, the part that was blocking the bolts is really just a stamped sheet metal outer that is hardly crimped over the body. It had rotated around the body a little bit. A couple good whacks on the edge of the through holes got it rotated to reveal the screw heads.

And in regard to my first post, I had assume the pins went through the holes in the outside of the hub, having never seen one before. They don't, pins actuate in the direction of the primary shaft. These holes appear to just be for lubrication.
