Clutch rattle?
« on: April 30, 2006, 07:09:18 PM »
I noticed a rattle coming from the lower end of my engine (78 cb750 f, completely stock), when idling in neutral. The rattle goes away if I pull in the clutch. Is this the common clutch rattle these bikes are known for or should I be looking at something else?

You are describing the classic clutch rattle. Mine does it also. Good state of tune including syncing the carbs can minimize it, but I'm not sure, in stock form anyway, the rattle can be completely eliminated. There is a modification that includes, I believe replacing one of the clutch disks that is supposed to work. Try a search for it. I believe a few folks here have done it, maybe one of them can give more info.

The '78 CB750F should have came from the factory with the updated clutch assembly. Try syncing the carbs or look for any severely worn parts in the clutch. Sometimes the clutch drum can have dimples in it from where the steel plates contact (can happen if the bike was beat on earlier in life, as in the case of mine. The drum had a bit of slop to it since it was so worn.). A little bit of rattle is normal.

Syncing carbs did wonders for mine.
