I have not been posting in a LONG while, this winters kitchen project became early summers project as well...

Anyway, project 13 is pretty much a rider now and "14" is complete waiting for a paint job idea to come to mind so I started resurrecting my Hayashi Rat Cafe.

This thing was a CL find about 2 years ago and it has been festering in the corner of my shop just waiting for some free time to be spent on it. Well the Bearded Lady Motorcycle show is this weekend and I already brought 13 to it last year and I wanted something ratty and a bit different for the show this year...

It was/is a total cluster of previous owner nutjob wiring, messes up domestic and metric hardware, crash damage and lame ass paint. In other words a perfect base for a rat cafe.

Obviously it is wearing a set of (in my opinion) pretty damn cool HAYASHI mags, Dunstall Bars and John Tickle rearsets and a Guilari hardtail seat. I don't know the maker of the pipe but it is good looking and sounds GREAT. It had a Amen air box on it but I fitted a early open airbox with a K & N filter for now. It was jetted with 140s! And it seems to run pretty well.
I don't know what has been done to the engine but considering all the other crap that was done in its past and the amount of grunt it has I have to think someone has messed with it other than just the pipe and jetting. It has a set of new stamped cases so something big happened at least once...lol.

The shocks are CB1100F. The master is new. All the chrome bits were done by the previous owner. I added a few bits from my stash and so far I think it is heading in the right direction.

Please forgive the brown side cover I didn't have the originals. I am also NOT going to take credit for the sticker covered chrome chain guard...

I few more tweeks and a new gasket on the alt side and it should be ready to roll to the show. Afterwards I will start thinking about how to really "finish" it.

Well if you are thinking of Hayashi Racing, then yes you are thinking of the same Hayashi. They are famous for making all kids of race wheels for motorcycles and cars. They have been around for ever and have made nice stuff all along.

So far it is running well enough I don't think I am going to tear into it. But I do have a Henry Abe 900cc kit sitting on the shelf if it ever does need love.

He lives! Oddly enough I was just thinking about "13" last night (I had a line on a 400F) and ended up re-reading the entire build thread. Only the owner of a biker the caliber of 13 could call this a Rat haha. I hope to make it to Bearded Lady, but with all things of this sort, work has a way of messing up my best laid plans. Look for a '76 550F (now complete with a broken side-cover

) and stop by and say 'Hey'.

I have been watching that auction... IF I could get anywhere near that I would start parting out the bike tonight!

It will be interesting to see how high that set goes for. It is for a CB/F so it is set up to take the rear disc, my set is the same size but obviously for a K bike with a drum.

Well the Hayashi Rat didn't make to to the bearded lady due to a spontaneous and copious fuel puking problem. I later found 2 plugged bowl vents

Anyway, it really wasn't ready to ride as I only had about 1.5 miles of shake down on it and everybody knows that $500.00 bikes really need at least 2 miles of shake down before you ride them anywhere...

I went through the carbs again, took off the factory airbox and went back to the pods (just until everything checks out). Well it really seems to like the pods (it is running 140 mains) and the stock box is staying off for now.

The P/O made a alt gasket out of used pizza boxes and had tried to glue and reuse a gear box gasket that was torn in 2 places. 2 new gaskets later I have a bike that only occasionally leaves a drop or two vs actually pouring oil on the ground everytime you lean the bike 2 degrees off vertical. And the drops it is leaving might just be residual (the Hayashi has yet to be steam cleaned.)

The tach that came with the bike looked cool in the last version but it seems it was for a different bike as it did not register rpms correctly so I begrudgingly replaced it. I loved the cracked face patina it had but I would rather see actual rpms than a guesstimate.

It still needs a front tire and a couple of little tweaks but so far I have no intention of making it pretty. The peeling wrinkle finish paint on the carbs and engine really seems to fit with the hazy chrome and dull aluminum...

It rides like a two wheeled tank. Lots of torque, it seems to rev well. It makes great sucking and blowing noises. And it has proven to me that I need to work on my upper body strength... Geez I am getting too old to ride these dang things!

Good to see you back at it! I, too, thought about 13 last night when I found a CB400F on CL. We all know you could eat off 13 if you wanted. That said, I agree with the others that Hayashi is far from "rat!"

The fender is litterally from a pile of junk... I agree it does look pretty cool but it is fiberglass and it offers NO fork stiffening help at all... I need to find a brace or modify a stock fender. I am pretty sure it is a Dunstall or other vintage fender. The P/O riveted it to the fork and I havent had the heart to take it off and brace up the front yet.

Where is the rat?

Most rat bikes are just sprayed with a couple cans of flat black and some animal horns taped on somewhere.

This bike looks much better. Like someone actually cared and used some skill.
