CB750 exhaust collar question
« on: July 23, 2011, 01:05:44 PM »
I've recently bought a 76 750 F that has a 4 into 4 original exhaust.  The PO had taken everything (and I mean everything) apart and I got a truckbed-o-parts which was amazingly complete but was lacking the collars to connect the exhaust to the engine.  This bike doesn't have studs normally associated with the exhaust ports, and I assume it uses the clamp style collars?  I've never dealt with these before.

Is there simply a seal that works with the clamp to connect the exhaust, or does it somehow use the half-rings used on the stud-style collars?  The manual only shows a diagram for the stud-mounted collars, and I'm clueless as to the parts I need to get these connected.

My 1971 750K1 has stub pipes protruding from the cylinder head that the individual exhaust pipes slip over.  These are then clamped down by the clamp-style collars.  No seals or anything else are used.

The stock exhaust on my 76 CB750F is a 4 into 1.

madmtn, is yours studs or ring clamp?
Not sure what it should have, sometimes th  they get changed to fit the other style because they happen upon a set of pipes.
Do you have the 2 studs, or the spigots (tubes) on the head ?

The 75/76 CB750F's have studs sticking out - just like the other SOHC CB750's.  In addition to the finned clamp/fitting, there are two half round collars, and one copper gasket - fastening/sealing each header pipe to the head.

Also, as madmtnmotors pointed out, stock on the F's (supersport) was 4-into-1.

I'm not familiar with aftermarket exhaust mounting, so I'm not sure how it would work with what you have... sorry

Hmmm.....no studs on a 1971 CB750K1.  Just stub pipes.  I'm not sure what year the changeover was made, but they're not all the same.

Mine uses two studs per pipe to mount the pipe to the head as shown on the attached image.

The studs can be put into a k head replacing the screws that held the exhuast spigot.Good way to mount up aftermarker 4-1 exhaust systems.

All models switched to the 2 studs in 77 and 78.
I was not sure about the first 2 years of F's. which has been confirmed.
Now we only got to find out about the A , I think they had studs.

Oh... thanks for the correction.  I made an assumption that this was standard for all the bikes.  :-[

so, yeah, I knew better than to assume  Benny Hill tells us not to "assume"
