Introducing......Myself!
« on: May 03, 2006, 09:06:43 AM »
Hi, my name's Rushoid, and I'm a newbie.  ;D

SteveD says I'm supposed to introduce myself and my bike. So here goes - bike first:

1978 CB750F with an odometer reading of 25K. I bought it off of Ebay back in February for $850. This is the first bike I've ever owned and ridden (except for a relatively scary round-the-block jaunt on a buddy's ZX-12) though I've wanted one since I was a kid. It wasn't running when I bought it but I wanted something I could learn on. The front brakes were locked when I went to pick it up. That was a fun load-up. With the help of a friend, it was running the first night I had it.  8) The excitement was short-lived though. On the maiden voyage (after cleaning up the front calipers), exactly 4.6 miles down the road it died. The ignition switch was bad. Then the wiring needed a little work. Then the points/condensers were replaced along with the plug boots. Carbs needed cleaning, front tire was dry-rotted, tank was dirty, petcock was clogged in reserve, clutch needed adjusted, 2 valve access plugs were cracked and leaking oil, etc., etc. Now the forks have slight leak. Talk about an education!  :o So now I'm riding it and it has been reliable for the last few weeks but I'm still a little scared to ride unless I know my wife can come pick me up! I've got about $1200 in it at this point. But that's still a pretty good deal. Isn't it? Please say yes.  :-\

My real name's Lee but I go by Rushoid on several things - Ebay, gaming sites, etc. I'm a fan of the band "Rush" obviously. I live in the Louisville, KY area and I'm 36 years old. I'm a bit of a smart-a** and I don't take hardly anything seriously. So if I post something that offends you, I probably didn't mean it that way.  ;D I look forward to picking your brains, trading ideas, and just generally bs. Hopefully I can help someone out too!

Ride Safe!
Rushoid

Welcome -- most of the failures you described are pretty common to these old bike and not at all unusual given the age of the rubber seals and wiring.  The engines are bulletproof and once you take care of all the leaks and creaks, you can ride this bike around the world without a problem.

Another welcome. Your ride sounds pretty par for the course. Good luck with the rest of your work on it, and hope to see you here often.  ;)

Hey Lee,

I'd say your $1200 is money well spent, just wait till all the chicks want a closer look at your ride!  Most guys here think you're not a real biker unless you get your hands dirty once in a while. They're damn reliable but there's always a little tinkering to do. Enjoy.

Welcome

Once you replace the hard rubber/plastic parts that need it and the parts that ware/need ajusting, you almost can't kill these CBs  Have fun, and I have never read any BS on this site, well unless it was Terry in A, DD, Cheapo, me, ect....... ;D ;D ;D

hello Rushoid - newbie myself and not sure if I'm allowed to do the greetings - it might be the special perk of the old timers ;)  but I noticed you have the 78F, same as mine. Some members admit that it is the most refined of all the 750s and it certainly has a brawny and lean no-nonsense attitude compared to the bulbous feminine look of the other model.   Anyways, welcome - I have asked many stupid questions here concerning the 78F and have been  treated kindly for the most part ;D  Its a pretty good group.   David

Well, thanks for the warm greetings. Just got back from a 50 mile ride and I'm happy to report zero problems! WOOHOO!!

Like I said I wanted something to work on. Before I got this bad boy, I didn't know anything about their mechanics. Didn't know where the points were or anything. Of course I'm nowhere near an expert, I'm confident I can fix damn near anything on it.

Again, thanks for the greetings and I'm sure y'all will get sick of me soon enough!  ;)

Oh, and ALL of Rush rocks!!!! Has anybody read "Ghost Rider?" It was written by Neal Peart (drummer for Rush) travelling around the world on his BMW. I haven't read it yet but I hear it's a good read.

No, not Tom Rush.....RUSH!!! You know, "Tom Sawyer, 2112, Fly By Night, Closer to the Heart" etc. I've heard of Tom Rush but don't know his music.

I'm a bit of a Triumph fan too. Saw them in concert in the late 80's with Yngwie Malmsteen (anyone remember him?). A most excellent show. Must be something about Canadian power trios. Maybe it has something to do with the exchange rate. ;D
