F mods
« on: July 21, 2011, 12:16:28 AM »
Okay, so I have two F engines, an F0 and an F1.  I know the F2 and F3 engines have a ton of head upgrades over the older F's from the factory, and have read they have different cranks, connecting rod bearings and con rod bolts, and pistons.  Can I buy an F2/3 head and camshaft, the different pistons, and the different bottom end components, put them into one of these I have, and it work?  Thanks.

A few misconceptions there. Same cranks and bearings. If you use a F2 head you should also use the F2 cylinders so the oil returns mate up. Definitely use F2 pistons with a F2 head UNLESS you get a overbore kit specific for a F2. You don't need to do anything with the bottom ends, just the top ends. Camshaft? As farv as I know either will work. Which one is better? You would have to measure lobe heights, lift and lobe centers. I don't know for sure.

As far as F & F1 engines - identical until ~ CB750F-20054xxx. They changed to thinner rings and thus the pistons are different due to this.

Cool.  I would like to do a big bore kit but the lack of funds won't permit.....  I still would have to sell some of the parts out of these I have to afford the new parts.  So the F2/3 con rods won't be stronger than the older ones?  I ride VERY hard, regardless of motorcycle age.  I rev WAY past the red line.....  And Carillos are soooo expensive, so if they might give me a little more cusion for catastrophic failure I'd like to do it.  As for the cam, I guess I don't need the slightly bigger cam out of the later F's seeing as I am gonna send one to Megacycle for a regrind someday anyway.  Thanks for the info!
