Simple Pulled Pork Sweetness
« on: July 22, 2011, 08:04:30 AM »
I love a good pulled pork sandie.
Last weekend I tried a new slow cooker/crock pot recipe and wanted to share.
I've been eating it all week.  :P
15 minutes prep the night before, and it'll be done by dinner the next day.

you'll need.. a crock pot.
~6-7lb pork shoulder
1-2 onions.
kosher salt, pepper and your favorite dry rub.
3-4 C apply juice
1 tsp liquid smoke

The night before....
Chop the onions (walla walla sweets are nice) and layer the bottom of your crock pot.
de-bone the pork and trim off, if you chose, any fat.
Give it a rub down with kosher salt, pepper, and dry rub, and place it in the crock pot on the onions and into the fridge.
in the morning (or 8 hrs before dinner), mix 1 teaspoon liquid smoke + 2C apple juice, and pour over your pork.
Top off your cooker with the remaining apple juice as needed.
Turn it on low and head out for the day knowing you're coming home to a good hot meal.
8-10 hours in the slow cooker will do it.  190F is the internal goal temp.
Turn the pork over 4 hrs into if you are around or have someone who can.
When cooking time and temp is reached, remove the pork from the cooker and place on a baking sheet. juices will flow. shred with forks, and enjoy between whatever carb-laden pork holders you have available, plain, or topped with your favorite condiments.

If you have the time, and a smoker, you can forego the liquid smoke and smoke it for a few hours @ 225F with alder or hickory, and then place in the crock pot with onions and apple juice until cooking temp is reached.

Post up any of your favorite pork butt recipes.
(iv'e got another one to cook in sometime in the next few days~)

Well! I am a huge fan of pulled pork sandies. I'll have to try your recipe. I had one at the Shelter Cafe the night of BackfireMoto (now part of BFM nights). Not a bad tasting sandwich for a happy hour special and all the waitresses are super cute.

My neighbor has a pressure smoker, not sure if you heard of one, I hadn't until she got it from her parents basement from somewhere back south/east where she's from. Some of her creations are pretty incredible, pork, chicken, brisket, all delish.

If your ever in West Seattle you should try the Brickyard BBQ, they are Texas style and pretty damn good. Instead of racing from cafe to cafe I prefer to race from BBQ joint to BBQ joint  ;D

Just fly on into KC and stop by Oklahoma Joe's for the best pulled pork samich in THE WORLD.

Gates has the best burnt end samich but I haven't tried OK Joe's yet so the jury is still out.

Arthur Bryant's is pretty damn awesome also, these dudes here in KC know how to cook some serious goddam BBQ, the best I have had so far. KC knows it's BBQ, period.

One thing about Seattle area food is 2/3 of our population was born somewhere else so we get a pretty good mix of different flavors. We can have KC style, Texas style, Memphis style, St louis style, we even have a big enough 'possum population for "Arkansas style". You name it, there probably is a restaurant for it. We have a place called The General's BBQ by my work he was transplanted from KC about 20 years ago. He does a great catfish and of course pulled pork. His beans are pretty damn good too.

Any excuse for a ride but I think it would be fun to map out all the good BBQ places around and make a day of riding around taste testing them. Awesome reason for a ride as well as eating BBQ. Not like I need one  ;)

I will try that recipe for sure. A friend of mine says he like to put the pork shoulder in the crock pot with a 2 liter of root beer, never tried it but he swears by it.

I'm supposed to meet up with people on the way from Denver to DC.  Figured out that leaving a vehicle in Salina would be a PITA I bought bus, but to Lawrence turned out $100 che3aper than Salina even though it was further.

I suggested that as I took the cheaper ticket to Lawrwence we check out Buffalo Bob's.

Used to live in Lawrence with a GF that worked there.; Can't wait for more, mixed reviews and all...

Whip up some red onion marmalade to go on top and you're all set.

Mmm I love rising around looking for good BBQ. Papa Bob's in Bonner Springs, a little mom-n-pop BBQ joint, is right up there with Oklahoma Joe's, though you get more for your money.

We used to attend a car show that had fantastic pulled pork. They finally told us they start with ham.
