Somebody tell me where this spring goes please!!
« on: April 29, 2006, 04:36:40 PM »
I have performaing some basic maintenance on my 750 K5 like oil, cleaning, inspecting etc...  After putting everything back together I have an extra spring left over.  The only thing I can think of is that it possibly goes in with the oil filter maybe?  The other items that I have removed are as follows:
tank
seat
oil pan
oil filter
exhaust
airbox
rear fender

The spring is 3/4' tall and 1' in diameter.  There are 3 coils & both ends are scored so it appears that they rest against metal.

Somebody please help this newb out before I blow my new baby up  :P

Check your oil filter.

That's what my inclination is but I want to be sure for obvious reasons.  Does it go on the bolt after the new filter is in place?  I feel like a total moron for getting myself in this situation but not enough to risk blowing my bike up.  I ask these questions with my eyes downcast and my hat in hand.  Please All-powerful Vintage Veterans have mercy on a beginner like me...

Spring goes up against the filter housing and presses the filter towards the cranckase. May be a washer between filter and spring.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

The washer may still be on the old filter.

Or in whatever you drained the oil into.. I've done that more than once. I now put a piece of old screen across the pan.

Man that Agent Orange really does mess with a man's head Dave, ha ha!  :o
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I have learned my lesson I promise.  In my defense I did reveal my error to every SOHC'er on the planet in an effort to right a wrong.  Truethfully if me making mistakes and then asking for help is going to offend everyone then I am in a lot of trouble ;D  I just wanted to ride a bike after many years off 2 wheelers, it was you guys who convinced me to actually wrench on the thing!  BTW I was changing the filter while I was changing the oil as well as removing the oil pan and cleaning the screen.  I was trying to do it right I just got careless with the spring, thats all.

I have to look at this picture every time I change the oil filter.  I just can't seem to remember the stackup!

Thanks for the visual aid.  I am certain that there was no washer when I took the old filter off so I will have to replace that today.  I have a screen over the oil container and I checked the old filter for it.  I guess this was a blessing in disguise because I would have never known there was supposed to be a washer in there if I hadn't left the spring out.  Thanks for all the replies everyone.

you also mention removing oil pan (sump), does the 750 engine have a spring behind the the pick up filter the same as the 400???

The only springs in the 750 pump assemblies, at least the early ones, are for the check valve and the pressure relief valve, nothing directly associated with the filter/pick-up screen.

You already have the correct position for spring, as for the washer, it was almost always missing by the second service.(even if serviced by Honda dealer ???) Someone would get into a rush ( paricularly on flat rate), toss the old filter and just fit a new one. Its a standard shim washer, about 1/2mm thick.(0.020") Forget the inside and outside diameters. we always kept 10 in stock and ordered 50 at a time as it fits all the inline fours until they went with spin on filter in the mid 80's

look on your old oil filter for the washer, it tends to stick to it.
