Cam Suggestions
« on: July 23, 2011, 12:07:40 PM »
Since I need to replace the camshaft, I was wondering which cam to go with.  Another one from an A, or go with something from another CB750.  Looking at used cams on flea-bay, and not spending a lot of money.

K cam advanced a little. Cheap improvement in overall power.

Are the K and F cams the same?

I don't believe so. K cams are far more readily available. Bike will run with F cam, but I'd be wanting a little more carburation.

It depends on the year.  For example, the 1976F and the 1978K cams are the same - but the same year cams (1976 F and K; and the 1978 F and K) were different.

Did a little more research:

14101-392-000 - 75 and 76F, 77 and 78K
14101-410-000 - 77 and 78F

The K0 through K6 bikes used different cams.

It is my plan to use the 392 cam, or a little "hotter" aftermarket cam - in combination with a different stock head (the 75 and 76F, the 77 and 78K have the same heads) in my "A".

1978 CB750A (upgrading very, very slowly)

Past bikes - Honda: SL350, CX650C, CB900C, CB1000C, CM450A; Kawasaki: several 1972 750 H2's; Suzuki: TC90J.

Bikes I want: CX650ED, a mid-sized japanese V-twin with ABS.

just curious - why are you replacing your cam? i've got a 77 hondamatic with about 35000 miles on it and the cam is worn - are hondamatics in general hard on cams?

Hondamatics are "easy" on their cams - due to the lesser lift/duration.  Cam wear on CB750's is not altogether unusual.  I'm guessing it (primarily) is dependent on oil change practices and oil quality.

Speaking only for myself, I just want more power.  It is embarrasing (to me) to be out run by my sons 450 auto . . . .

My oiling issue ate up 3 of four cam journals, so a replacement is needed.  I bought a pair of bases on e-bay that came with a cam, but that cam has pitting on the lobes.  No big deal, since I got everything else, including the rocker arms, and the price was right.  So now I need to find a cam, order some gaskets, and get to work.
