75' CB550 Controls suggestions
« on: July 23, 2011, 06:29:22 PM »
Well after allot of checking it turns out my turn signal switch and starter switches are just toasted. I have tried cleaning etc.. They just are not going to work, lots of rust in them after sitting for so many years. So my question is does anyone have any suggestions for replacements? I really don't care if they are for the CB550 or not I just want some thing that won't take much to wire up and work.

Thoughts?

E-Bay and not very much money should solve your problem entirely.

But which ones? The ones for CB550's are way to expensive if you can even get them. So are there some that would work that maybe for some other bike? I just don't have the money for replacements nor do I want to buy some POS controls. I would like them to be new or near new, I just want them to work with out a ton of re-wiring.

Thanks,

Inexpensive/cheap and easy to wire are all subjective but I'll try to help.

I've researched replacements. It should be pretty easy if you do not mind moving your headlight switch to the left side. Many Kill Switch / Starter combos for dirtbikes are available on ebay. Then you can find a left side set of controls that does everything else including high/low/off for the headlights.

If you're more crafty you can move the starter switch to your side cover and your headlight switch to your housing. This opens up your options more into the dirtbike/atv market.

In my opinion the only controls that you need to have available on the bars are:

Horn
Turn Signals
Kill Switch

People will debate about turn signals since some people don't run them, and people will debate about the kill switch because we have dual-type throttle cables. But a horn button is pretty useless if it's out of reach.

Also, if you get new left side controls you'll need a clutch lever.

Here's some ideas:

I did find replacements. They turned out to be better then I thought, however I still would like to replace them with some new ones over the winter. jwarriner, those links are perfect. The clutch was the one thing stumping me. The lever should work well as a replacement. Right now I have a push button switch on my handle bar mounts and it is working well so I left it for now since you still need the key to start the thing. So this winter I am going to try and replace them. Again the ones I just picked up are nice, however I don't want to have to do this over again..  ;)

Thanks again jwarriner!
