Drying washing
« on: July 28, 2011, 03:48:31 AM »
I'm on the internet & the missus is doing the clothes washing.  She makes a broad sweeping statement (as they do) that no-one in California hangs washing outside to dry...

Tell me it aint so!

I would but I live in one of those stupid developments where you're not allowed to have a clothesline. I also live near the Amish, who only hang clothes out to dry-seems those hand-cranked dryers don't work very well...Larry

In my experience from the various areas of this country that I've lived in, it depends a lot on the income level of the neighborhood.  I've hardly ever seen laundry hanging out in middle class and higher income areas.  It's also a cultural thing.  The house where we lived in Denver was in a relatively nice neighborhood but happened to be mostly Hispanic and Asian.  I saw more laundry hanging there (my house, too) than anyplace else I've lived.

Many people in upper class suburban areas seem to think it's unsightly.  I know several years ago in southern California when they were having energy shortage problems and rolling black-outs there was a big stink over the fact that many home owner's associations actually forbid hanging laundry outside to dry.

I would NEVER live in one of those controlled communities.  I saw a CNN story last year about someone in Washington state ignoring a law like that, and the legal battle that ensued.  If I remember correctly, they lost.  But I applaud their attempt.

yeah. heard abut that one 333.
Our HOA prohibits us from hanging any laundry out to dry, too. they prevent us from doing lots of environmentally conscious things....like my state approved and professionally installed $25k grid-tied solar array which was quicky veto'd.  had my state & govt tax rebates and PUD loan paperwork all ready to go...it was deemend 'unsightly'
fkrs!
But they quickly approved my gen-tran hookup so i could waste gas, and add to the air and noise pollution when the pow goes out  :o

I put a clothes line up at my house. I even made it fancy with the pulleys so I don't have to step off of my deck to put out the clothes. Not many people (if any) around me put theirs out. I have a working dryer, but why use it when the sun will do the work for free? Most Americans are just too lazy and don't care. Simple as that.

Not to mention one other concern- the dryer heating the house in the summer.

Nothing like bedsheets fresh off the clothes line. :)  We use one all the time in the spring, summer, and fall.  Some of the suburban areas have banned them but it's just another reason to live in the city instead of a suburban cultural wasteland.  Can't have a basket ball hoop, can't paint your house that color, can't have a boat parked in the driveway, can't do this, can't do that. :P

I have not seen clothing drying on a line since I moved out of the Bronx.

Hanging clothes out in the sun and wind freshens them, kills most of the micro organisms hang around after being washed, helps bleach them, only costs the price of the line, pulleys and clothes pegs doesn't contribute as much to global warming, even in the winter hanging them out and letting them freeze cleans up stains, the only bind is rain.

I haven't seen anybody hang clothes out on the line, for years, except my next door neighbor used to. She was up in her 80's and now she's in s local Nursing Home. Even though she had a dryer, she still liked to hang her sheets and pillowcases out on the line. She and her Husband were raised on "Self Supporting " Farms and He was still growing a nice size garden and splitting firewood til he was in his 80's. Used to sit out on their driveway in the evenings and visit (listening to their stories of years ago, so interesting). But, as I said, she's in the Nursing Home and He's gone now.

I can see clothes hanging on my neighbor's line right now.  In Chinatown it's all over the place.
