Chain oiler question, really confused.
« on: July 14, 2011, 07:21:09 AM »
So I've done some searching around the forums and am really confused.  I have a 76 CB750F and I'm still confused as to whether or not it has a chain oiler.  This pulley seems pretty wet and it's recently started dripping oil from the rear of the engine, around this location.

I decided to pull off the cover and take a look in there.

There is no bolt in the middle but it does look like it's threaded.  Since this is a recent problem I'm not sure what to think.  If there is an oiler with no bolt, wouldn't it be losing massive amounts of oil?

That seems to be the consensus, but I can't seem to figure out why the sprocket is covered in oil?  or where the oil is leaking from? or why it looks like it's threaded?  I will have to take a closer look and make sure that it's really threaded, I could be wrong on that.

No chain oiler. I have a 750K6 and it doesn't have it. I just turned off the one on my 750KO. Basically it just makes a big mess.

I'll bet if you stick something in the hole it bottoms out quickly. The ones with the oiler are hollow all the way. I think it was for cheap expediancy, they just plugged the hole, leaving the outer threaded part visible.

Your oil is coming from elsewhere, likely the seal.

Thanks for the tips! I likely won't be able to look at  until the weekend. How hard is it to replace that seal?

Oil Leak
« Reply #5 on: July 25, 2011, 09:45:36 AM »
I took the pulley off over the weekend and took a few pictures of what I found:

It doesn't look to me like it's leaking from behind the pulley.  It looked like the oil is possibly coming from gasket behind the trans cover:

It's also not always leaking, I wiped up a bunch of the mess inside and I'll recheck it after I ride to see if I can tell anything.

Any advice for other things to check is appreciated.

wipe it all down really good and dry... then spray it with a healthy dose of foot spray. Any oil leaks will then soon reveal their source.

+1 this works well. I found and fixed several small, but annoying drips using this method.

Sure its just not oil from lubing your chain.Have you done that recently?

Foot spray? As in "tough actin' Tinactin" type foot spray?  I'll give it a shot.

I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't lubed it recently enough, but some of the mess inside may be from chain lube.  Some of it is also definitely oil though as it's a new drip and it's only occasionally after I ride it and park it for a while.

Check the shifter seal.

I suspect Honda knew it was a weak link, as it is one the few engine seals replaceable from the outside

Or just some powder- flour, anything you can apply to the area to suss out the origin of the leak.

Degrease and try and clean the underside of the engine as much as possible to try and isolate where the leak may be. Could be a stat cover, tranny cover, around the shifter spline etc. Kind of like water and plumbing the oil can migrate around to the lowest point before it makes its drip or runs down the kickstand.
