Austin, Tx '78 CB550
« on: July 24, 2011, 06:31:49 PM »
Hey guys. Been lurking for a couple of months. I got my bike on ebay a few weeks ago. It's a '78 cb550. It was all original except for the seat and handlebars. There was about 9k on the speedo but the title had an exception for mileage so there's no telling what it's really got. The bike seems to be in good working order. No leaks, no smoke, everything works except the kickstarter often wont engage. The bar just pushes down freely; it wont ratchet up if you know what I mean. Perhaps it's user error? I've also got difficulty finding neutral when it's hot but I understand that's a pretty common issue and I've found a few posts on how to remedy that. My plans for now are to just ride and tinker with it until winter when I'll strip it down to the frame and do a rebuild.

Ebay's been my friend so far but if anyone knows a good shop in Austin for parts, etc. I'll be happy to support the local guys.

P.S. I am not a hipster.

I found a crappy re-upholstered seat, some superbike handlebars, and replaced the unfortunately rusted-through original exhaust with a MAC 4-1

Howdy!
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Howdy from Lake Travis!

Nice looking 550. Doubt you'll find any local shops other than the dealer that sells OEM parts. As you probably know, there is a for sale section on this website and an abundence of 550 parts for sale right now.
I recently sold my 550 [bought two 750's] and have a couple boxes of 550 parts leftover. Let me know if you need anything in particular [no "cafe" parts],

Let me know if your out here by the lake!

Thanks for the welcome guys! Is the vintage bike night still at Draught House? I've been there once or twice before but not with my own bike. A buddy of mine used to have an old Enfield.

Thanks for the parts offer, I'll let you know if I need anything once I really get into the bike.
