new chain too tight - wait till it stretches?
« on: April 30, 2006, 11:24:04 AM »
I just put a new 530 o-ring chain and 17f/48r (listed as stock) on my 76 750f. Chain length listed in dennis kirk for the bike was 102. The new chain is very tight even with the adjusters all the way out - virtually no play in it whatsoever and it's affecting how easily the wheel turns - and now I'm getting a slight rythmic click that looks to be coming from the front sprocket shaft. Clearance is fine - nothing hitting anything on the outside.

Should I wait till the chain stretches a bit or should I get a new longer chain? Freaking dennis kirk - how could they have the wrong listing!

You need to get it fixed ASAP. find out why its too tight before you trash either rear wheel bearings(not too expensive) output shaft bearings or even break crankcase. Its unlikly that the chain will break first but it is a possibility.
Chains dont stretch, (well they do within elastic limits but its too small an amount for us to worry about) they wear the pins, bushings and rollers..

PJ is correct, you don't want to run it that way.  It will damage something.

It is odd that 102 links isn't long enough.  That is the correct length if your bike is stock. I am running 102 links on my '75F, and that is with an 18 tooth countersprocket.  Did you count the links in the new chain?  The easy way is to count the pins.

Haven't counted it yet, but it's definitely too tight. I'm not going to run it that way. The Dennis Kirk order showed it as 102 but maybe they sent me the wrong one. How annoying - I just wanna ride. I wonder if a bike shop would put in two more links or if I should just go through the painfully long process of sending it back and waiting for the right one. Crap.

Count the links.   You could run 2 masters and a link but most people will tell you that will create a nuclear explosion. Only if you did it until you got the right one but DK might want it back unused.

a master is supposed to be to the toloerances of a normal link... but, just to be sure... i'd run more than one link inbetween but, i see no reason it would fail over any of the other links

Are you sure that someone has not put on a sprocket with extra teeth? That might cause the problem.

I meant to include this but forgot.   That is when I ran 2 masters.  Went with a big rear sprocket to play with gearing.  Once figured what I wanted bought all new.
