Leaking issues!!!!
« on: September 22, 2011, 08:21:01 PM »
Hey guys just got my 75 550, finally put together and ready to start when i switched on the fuel and out came a steady stream of gas out of my pod air filters..... no bueno.

Then took the gas of and tried turnin it over and it started and ran for about five mins.  Totally went through the whole bike motor and all. first breath of this baby in 26 years! Super pumped but i dont dig the waterfall of gas.... any ideas...?

Matt

Adjust floats. It's easiest when you pull the carbs (and more accurate) but can be done with them installed. Set them at 22mm from the bowl sealing surface. Make sure not to compress the little spring loaded needle valve when you adjust them. The spring loaded rod should be fully extended when the floats are set. Otherwise you will have fuel starvation issues. I did.

My carbs were leaking from all 4 over flow tubes on my 75 550, but after a float adjustment, no problems. I also suggest lapping the needle valve against the brass orifice with a little polishing compound for a better seal after 35 years of corrosion.

+1 with checking floats but the float needles are probably sticking, not closing off the flow of fuel when the bowls are full. They will need to be cleaned or replaced most likely; then check the height of the floats.
