My 77 had 14,000 on it with a trashed drivetrain. From the condition of the bike, I'm thinking the original owner rode the #$%* out of it for 11,000 miles w/ very little maintenance, it started running rough, he dropped it once and then it sat in the garage. The second owner kept it inside until about a year or so ago when they moved it outside to begin rusting. Thank God i got it when i did. Another couple years outside around here and it would've been toast.

Awesome deal Matt!! Wutcha gonna do with this one???? Is it 530 chain?? I just mentioned your name in a thread on the 4 sale section about sprockets. Did ya convert the one you rode to Nevada yet or are ya gonna run the 630 into the ground like the last one???? ;D ;D ;D
The new one is 530 chain (I think from the factory). Just yesterday I went into the city and bought a chain and sprockets from Charlie (super nice guy, talked me through the whole installation procedure. His shop is looking WAY better than it did 10 years ago when I lived around the corner from it, too.) and tires from K.C. Engineering. Got the rear tire on with the help of some new tire irons I got at Cyclegear.

WAYYYYYY better than the bicycle tire levers I've been using. This used to take me 45 minutes of sweating and cursing, now it's 10 minutes or less and no problem!
My old bicycle levers -

I haven't converted the 77 yet but I plan to very soon. Sean said to get a hold of him before I do for his recommendation of gearing but I haven't heard back from him yet. I'm leaving for the east coast in a week and a half so I better figure it out soon!

My incredibly patient and supportive girlfriend, Tracy, torquing down the new sprocket. Her inner hatred of my motorcycle hoarding is being beaten back by her innate desire to make awesome machines work well and be shiny.  She's pretty much the best ever.

Everything sounds real good Matt. Don't ever take a sweetheart like her for granted. The good ones just don't happen along everyday!!!Yeah I didn't know for sure about the F's but the K's didn't go 630 till 77'. Better off with the 530 (don't wanna have to do the search again even though it turned out good!) and thank God you can convert from 630 to 530. Take care Matt and mebbe we could swing another ride this year before the rain flies.

Yep.

Yup.

Mmmhm.

Yep.

This is all from last week. I been a bit busy w/ work and preparing for my upcoming trip back east on the 77F as well as entertaining my friend and his son who flew out here last Sunday to come along on the journey.
I completely failed to synch the carbs today. Motion Pro "Synchpro" is complete garbage. Can anyone recommend a quality tool. Cost is not really a problem as I've been doing enough of these bikes that I think I can justify kicking down for it.
p.s. Still desperately searching for a luggage rack. Anyone?

What a sweet score, Matt. Very nice!

I wrote you a message back with links and everything, but before I could hit send the computer pooped. Had to leave and thought I'd get another message off later, but......

FAIL!
Anyway, the short of the message was- I use JT sprockets straight out of the PartsUnlimited catalogue available at just about ANY motorcycle store or online. Exactly the same stuff you probably got for the 75 SS as it's listed for the 69-76 Honda's. 17tooth front/48 tooth rear keeps it pulling strong from a stop and through the twisties. If you want to do long freeway hauls and keep the revs down you can go with a 18 tooth front, but it's kinda sluggish taking off from a stop and not as quick on the power coming out of turns. I keep a spare 18T handy, but use 17T for most all occasions.

I've read here of people having trouble aligning their conversions i.e. having to shim this, or shave that, but the JT sprockets were a bolt on for me, and my alignment is spot on. There ends up being a small gap between the final drive output shaft and the shoulder of the front sprocket, and I put a washer in there as a spacer, but I'm not even sure it's necessary.

If you want to come by on a weekend to put on the new chain, and tune the bike for your trip you're more than welcome to. Otherwise, have a great trip and I'll give ya shout next time I'm riding out to Skyline.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

Matt, the chain looks tight, considering the bike is on the center-stand. With weight on the rear wheel, the chain will get tighter.

That bike looks great. Nicely done. I have a luggage rack with a basket but it came off of my 550k. Not sure if it will mount properly. You can look at my previous pics of my 550k and you can see the set up.

"Upcoming trip back east on my 77" huh?! What do you have planned? I'm at the end of your second day so you guys have a place to stay if you'd like. That is unless you head farther north along the I-80 corridor. Plenty of room and a big hot tub for the end of the day. I'd have to give you a detour off I-70 to my place to avoid the interstates once you get across the border.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Thanks Jerry, but we're headed north first. Gonna take the 1 up into Oregon then meander over to Idaho to ride the infamous hwy 12(I hear there's a sign that says "Curves" next 67 miles 8) ). Then into Missoula, Mt, down to Jackson Hole for a day of white water rafting, up to the Beartooth Pass and eventually wind up in PA.

Yeah, I hadn't adjusted it properly yet. It's better now. I also ran into an issue w/ the P.O.S. chain tool i bought at Cycle Gear. I showed them my chain and asked for the correct tool, when I got it home the directions said "Not for 530 or 630 chains, if used on a 530 or 630 chain, grind off peening first". I used it anyway as I was in a hurry and did as instructed but the chain pins actually dug into the tool "anvil" and didn't peen properly because they pushed through too far. I haven't done it yet but I'm pretty sure I can rectify this by pushing the pins back w/ a channel locks or something and peening again. It looks safe as is but i don't want to take any chances.

All the stuff is still in my garage, Matt

Which POS chain tool did you buy at Cycle Gear? I have the Stockton chain tool kit from there, and it works ok for removal and installation. It's the c-clamp type doohicky with 3 anvils, a couple punches, spring, etc... I threw away the instructions, but I do have to grind off the peening for chain REMOVAL. When INSTALLING it is possible to push those pins out the back while peening the new pins if the backing plate is not positioned properly. Took me a couple times before I got the hang of it.

My new Morgan Carbtune arrived today. WAYYYYYY better that the SynchPro. Thanks for the recommendation! Got the carbs synched and took her on a 110 mile ride down to Skyline/Woodside/Tunitas/Alpine, etc. What a great bike! I haven't ridden one in stock trim for a while now and it was a blast! Super fun scraping pegs in the "sit up and beg" position. I usually ride bikes w/ clip-ons or clubmans and rear-sets which encourage hanging off the side and dragging knees. It was really cool just mellowing out and leaning over, pretending it's 1975 again. 8)

make sure the sprocket bolt has not come loose and the sprocket is wobbling that can ruin a chain and gears
