Yeah I was planning on settling for a MAC 4-1 header off ebay for $300 but then saw this and just HAD to have it! I guess it was (most likely) made by Kook's custom headers in the 70's. I wish I could find some good pictures of them installed on a bike but It's tough to search for a header that's not common... I'm just stoked that I got it for so cheap! I don't have a build thread yet because this bike was kind of a diamond in the rough and I just polished it up - I bought it for $850 in pretty neglected, but not abused condition (luckily it had been garaged for its entire life). It's only got about 7000 miles on it as of now and the only things it needs are a new seat cover ($90) and a new exhaust. The header should arrive in the mail tomorrow and I will post pictures of the install. Maybe even a sound clip if I can get a videocamera 8)

Here you go mate, here's my set on my K1, taken 5 or 6 years ago, with my mate Andre sitting on it. I built the K1 from a collection of unrelated parts I'd scored on EBay, at swap meets etc over a few years, and I got bored one weekend and built the bike from whatever was lying around in my garage.

I bought those pipes new in 1980 for my first K1, (60 bucks back then) and loaned them to another mate, eventually rescuing them from behind his garage where they'd been hanging over his back fence for the last 10 years or so of their life. They're getting a bit tatty now, so I should probably have them re-chromed, or maybe ceramic coated. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Alright so I'm back finally. The exhaust took forever to ship, my internet router went kaput, and I was obligated to go camping with my sister's boyfriend... So after a good 2-3 weeks of waiting, I have some pictures of the exhaust to post.

Check these out. They aren't "Kook's" I don't think because they are made in Japan - I still haven't figured out who makes them. But they look killer. And they sound brutal. The sound coming out of these pipes is unbelievable... I've never heard anything with such a rumble (it almost sounds like it's running on three cylinders - but it's not. The bike pulls like a freight train.) I assume the characteristic sound comes from the 1-3 and 2-4 crossover and the straight through design with fiberglass baffles.

Yeah needless to say, I'm pretty flippin pleased  8) I love the sound of these pipes! They sound so snarly compared to the ricey sound of most 4-1 canisters. I'll try to get my buddy to let me borrow his camcorder and upload some clips. stay tuned  ;D

Did you have to do any carb work since you went from a 4-1 to 4-2?

Terry, over on this continent, drag pipes are single unbaffled pipes, also called straight pipes
Those are 4 into 2 headers..

I haven't had to do any adjustments to the carbs after the swap. No hesitation at any throttle position when the engine is warm and the plugs all look tan and reasonably clean (there is still a little soot on them from a restrictive air filter that i replaced). And there is no sign of bluing on the pipes after 200 miles.

No worries Frank, I understand that "Americanese" is a bastardised version of proper English, so I can understand your confusion. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Dang, I can't believe you only paid 850 for that 550.  It couldn't have been neglected too much!  Great score on the pipes and the bike!
