Will the Airbox for a 1978 fit a 1977, also will the side covers fit...and for that matter what won't fit a 77 from a 78?

As far as I can tell the only difference is the tank striping and the side cover badges. Physically they are the same and parts are interchangeable.

there are only a few differences. the needles in the carbs on the 77 havew slots the 78 does not. The mains are slightly larger on the 77 than 78. The seat on the 78 is stepped a bit more. Just a few minor changes but you should be able to use any part from a 78 on a 77.

What about the left side cover and intake valves?  Talking about the F2?

Well dont quote me on this but I think the 78 had the same valves as the f2. Sidecovers however are another matter entirely. They will not fit right. Different shapes completely as far as I know.

Ok, what models are we talking about?

F models are pretty much the same from 77-78 (yes even the side covers)

K- models are pretty much the same as well

A- models are also the same.

however between the models not a lot is interchangible. Internally the K, F and A bike engines are all different (the valve cover I think will swap over, as well as some of the other basic covers, but heads and pistons, etc are a no go).

And this is just 750s,

what about 550s?

You can't just ask what from a 77 will fit a 78, you need to be more specific as to model.

Incidently, in a pinch a 78 K left sidecover will fit a supersport, but it is the wrong shape. I have one on my 78 750F just to keep the rain out.
