Fun Old Tool Project
« on: August 31, 2011, 06:00:54 PM »
Well I got this old Shop Smith Mark 5 a while ago.  Its missing a few small things but all and all its there.  Plugged in and she started right up.  Basically I want to clean and lube her up and get her working 100%.  The girlfriend wants to do some wood working....(insert joke here)
Not sure if ill paint the unit or just clean them off
I need to track down and manual and source some parts

I have
-compresser
-jig saw, dont think its missing anything
-table saw, think its missing parts
-few other parts im not sure what they are
im trying to figure out how to run it as a lathe

Anyone have one of these?

My wife's stepfather is very big into restoring old delta and craftsman woodworking tools. He is constantly referencing this website so I would look there for more info: http://www.owwm.org/

Just did a quick search in the photo index and here's a pic of one setup as a table saw

Here's another for manuals, not free though.

Good luck, don't forget to post some pics of your handy work once you get that far.  ;)
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Jag man, I will be using mine tomorrow. First thing that I have found out is that you cant just go to the hardware store and buy the saw blades for them. The center hole on most tablesaws is 1/2" but on the Shop Smith it is about an inch. Mine is a bit more together right now and will post a pic.

One thing that I have been thinking about is trying to use mine as a vertical milling machine for odd jobs in my basement. All you need is a rotarty table or any other machinist X-Y movement table and the Shop Smith is now......a milling machine for making motorcycle parts. 8)

Good luck.
