Ajdust vavles == resync carbs?
« on: July 28, 2011, 03:39:04 PM »
If I adjust the valves back into spec, should I do a carb sync as well?

Not sure if it would change vacuum pressures that much, but figured I would ask.

Yes, but only if your valves were out of tolerance by a wide margin will you see a change.

Checked them anyway, they were fine.

Engine sounds much better now with a redo of the valves. I did it about 400 miles ago, but was concerned it might drift since that was the first time they had been reset in who knows how long.

Also, it is was nice to see the valves absolutely drenched in oil from the oil pump rebuild.

It's always a good day when things go correctly. How hard was it to adjust your valves? Are you mechanically inclined and have you done it before? I'm tempted to do it but I really do not want to mess her up.

did my valves today aswell.. it's rather amazing how 3 valves out of tollerance by .001 each makes such a huge difference.

It took me about 30 minutes today, and it was my first time ever adjusting valves.  90deg angled feeler gauges made it easy peesy.  getta .002, .003, and .004(for checking your .003 exhaust).
Motion pro makes one that's .002 one side, and .003 on the other, cost me like $2.50.

Don't sweat it man!!! We can walk you through it no problem. A couple of things before you start......get a good 6 pt. socket (17 mm if I remember correctly) and as long of a ratchet or breaker bar  as you can for the covers. They have an o ring in there that can be a bugger to break loose especially if they haven't been off for awhile. You may wanna have some of those o rings on hand just in case.I never needed to replace mine. Another thing I like to do......the job goes easier with the spark plugs removed. Its a great time to replace the plugs if you haven't in awhile. Be carefull...use the proper socket,universal joint and extension to remove the plugs (especially 2 & 3). Use a piece of 3/8" fuel line to start the plugs back into the head. Lessens the chance of cross threading. Make sure they are properly gapped before reinstalling. Make sure the engine is cold before adjusting. Me & someone else were on here yesterday talking about adjusting the valves cylinder by cylinder instead of doing it as the book says (its more complicated). Ask if you wanna know how or look for thread about valve adjustment in the last few days. Good luck with it and never be affraid to ask a question/ learn something new.

Good advice Crackerbat. I like to have the higher and lower sides of the spec so you can do a go- no go adjustment.

Thanks breeze, I changed out the spark plugs the day I got my 550F... I did have to pick up a thin walled spark plug socket... I gapped them properly.. .24-.28 I think I had my around .28 maybe ..27... Maybe i should try the valve adjustment on the 550F incase something goes wrong I won't be without a ride... Just sold my KZ but still have it in the garage until the family member picks it up next week....
