Mercury in oil pan?
« on: July 26, 2011, 06:03:06 PM »
Pulled the oil pan to check the screen and make sure it was not clogged with cork from a failed clutch plate.

What I did find was what looked like mercury beads in the bottom. Bright, silvery and split when tapped with a screwdriver.

Looked to be about what would be in a mercury switch, or less.

Any ideas?

Can't think of any other cause but like you say........how did it get to the oil pan? You would think it got sucked through the intake and blown out the exhaust.

I dunno about that.  It wouldn't atomize with the gas, nor does it compress.  It's pretty heavy, it could likely seep and sit on the ring and gradually squirt past on compression?

It would then reform into larger globs in the pan.

Just a possible alternative.  I'd expect it to get sucked thru the exhaust myself.

My final answer would be to stop using an old glass thermometer to check our oil temp  ;D

I've heard alot of people say that they sucked some up when using that type of synch tool. I spent the extra coin a few years back and bought the Morgan carbtune. I find it to be a great investment.

Sounds as good as any explanation.

Could be, could be...

This is California Gold Country. American River is a block away and I ride the 49 past the discovery site in Coloma as part of my favorite ride.
