Carbon on exhaust ports.
« on: July 28, 2011, 12:04:19 PM »
I took off two of the headers and could see quite a bit of carbon buildup on the exhaust ports. I carefully brushed it out using a stiff plastic brush and put it all back together.

What is the typical cause of this? Running rich?

The bike was not well tended before I got it, so now that I have most of the mechanical issues sorted out, what was the likely cause of the problem? Will it just burn off or do I need to get more aggressive about cleaning it out?

Could it be caused by oil getting past the rings? I don't see any evidence of oil burning after about 300 miles since the last change, so I am fairly certain they don't leak much if at all.

Gunked up exhaust ports is usually oil getting burnt and depositing itself on the port walls and inside the header.  When looking to buy a SOHC sitting on someones garage floor, Clean ports = good rings, dirty ports = high mileage or low compression.  Running rich forms soot and mild carbon but nothing like oil coking.

oil coking

But how do we market this oil coke to the inner cities?
