What newer bike would you buy?
« on: July 29, 2011, 12:10:12 PM »
So... I've got a little more money in my income now and I'm considering buying a newer bike.

I ended up (so to speak) with my cb750 as it was ridiculously cheap and I was ridiculously broke. It's given me years of satisfaction and I enjoy everything about it. That it's cool, pretty quick & powerful, easy, and of course fun to ride long distances as well as short.

If you had a budget of about $5,000 to $8,000
What newer bike would you buy?
I've always heard good things about BMWs...
But what year / model?

I'm also considering just buying another SOHC with fewer miles in better condition.  :D

Thoughts?

And yes I know this has been discussed before but I couldn't find it in my searches.

Are you thinking of an airhead or oilhead (flat twin) BMW, a flying brick (longitudinal water-cooled 4) or slant 4 (transverse water-cooled 4)?  I like my BMW (see signature), but they're not cheap to maintain.  The saying among BMW riders is that, as far as the manufacturer is concerned, BMW stands for Bring More Wallet!

For that money I'd buy me a 1985 GSX-R 750, 1986 GSX-R 1100 and a 1982 Katana 1100 and be a happy man for the rest of my sorry life ;)
What else would you possibly need if you already have a CB 750?  ::)

I've been contemplating the same thing. The Triumph Scramblers are intriguing to me. You could probably find a used Thruxton at the top of that price range. A decent Beamer from the 80's shouldn't be tough to find for half your budget. How new are we talking?

If it were one new bike only....I'm diggin' the Triumph Rocket 3 but that would probably only be enough $$ for a downpayment. On the other hand....I could get a used Kawi 900 Z1 AND probably 1 or 3 other SOHC 750's that are set up differently from each other. I'm leanin' real hard with more quanity and quality !!!!!!

I'd go with a cb 1000rr or a VFR800 for touring around and still scrape some peg.

Call me a sadist with a budget but I would love a new royal enfield bullet in BR Green. You can still rebuild them with a nail file and roll of duct tape. Just not crazy about the way most newer bikes look that's why I have a 35 year old bike now.

What is this mysterious "newer bike" object that you mention.  I thought they stopped building motorcycles after 1979. ;)

Maybe vstrom or KTM adv, or at least shop for a best price for a good used one of either.

And CB1 400 from 89-92. Does that count as newer?

my neighbour bought a new 650 vstrom a year ago,he likes it,it replaced his mid 90s gsx 750 he had for 15 years which was bullet proof,he misses the power a little though, ive ridden it and its a good steerer, the engine braking is like a jacob exhaust or an old dynatard mack,as soon as you back off it slows down, for the purists i know the dynatard was so you could change to a higher gear going up a hill with the wide ratio six speed compound transmission and slow the engine before the forward motion of the truck slowed down,i like old macks, they take a knack to drive.

 I have a 2000 Deluxe.

That said, it's not much of a traveling bike. Great "pub hopper" but not really suited for long travels. So......to the question.

I considered the same thing. I went to the local dealers and looked around. I saw a few things that interested me somewhat. But in the end, wanting something I could ride longer distances on at current speeds (70 mph) (I also have a 63 Dream) I ended up buying a 71 CB750. Now with the money saved I'm looking for couple old Hodaka's that my son and I can take out and beat around on.

I have a 2005 Kawasaki Concours.  I would say it is darn near the perfect bike for me.  It is the frugal mans BMW.  Water cooled, shaft drive, four cylinder.  Fast and fun, yet I could hop on it tomorrow and ride across country.

A used Concours, Yamaha FJR or Honda ST (1100 or 1300) should fall into that price range.  In fact you can probably pick up a nice used Sport Tourer and have money left over for farkles.

I would so snap an Aprilia Shiver. It is a 750 as well. Must be something about the 750 size for me.
Otherwise, I have to travel the darkside and get a HD xr1200. It is modeled after their 70s style xr750.

06-08 Buell xb12 or Triumph Speed triple. If you got the funds to handle a bit of a loan payment I would wait for the new Husqvarnas 900R to come out.

Aprilia (and it's dealers) are dumping old Tuonos in prep for the new V4 coming later this year.  Starting at $7,699 when the MSRP is 13k.. If you can get over the look then its a pretty damn good buy.
http://www.apriliausa.com/en-US/News/76580/Tuono%2bWrap-up%2bSale_NewsPg.aspx

Currently I am saving for a Buell 1125 and pegasus racing to release their typhon kit so I can have my dream bike.. Hopefully still squeezing under 9k for everything.

I have No idea about any newer bike I would consider. Like a few have said, I'd go for an older one.

I've always liked the Norton Commando and the Royal Enfield Interceptor.

Call every HD dealer you can.   ME and a buddy of mine each picked up a Buell 1125CR after HD pulled the plug on them.

Brand spanking new from the dealer for right at $7000.  That is not a misprint.   That Rotax 1125 is an absolute beast.

That is more bike than any normal person would ever need.   Never really been a Buell or HD guy, but I know a good deal

when I stumble onto them.      If I were to do it again, I think I'd stock pile some more CB750s....if I could find em.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.
