Saving the stock exhaust
« on: July 30, 2011, 08:22:48 PM »
Hi,

I have a stock 78 cb550k exhaust exterior has some surface rust but no big holes or anything.  The interior is a different story though.  I can tell there are some loose pieces of baffle in the muffler.  I've shaken it around and some rust/dust comes out along with a piece of baffle now and then.  Is there any way to save this from the dump?

I was thinking of somehow replacing the baffle or modding it so the baffle becomes removable, blasting and ceramic coating the headers and muffler interior & exterior to extend its life.

Any input would be appreciated

Mufflers are inevitable. Over the years from condensation and the elements, it'll errode from the inside. Makes it more difficult being a one piece to take apart. Best bet is what you've stated. Acid dip will also remove the rust in all the nook and crannies inside the exhaust. Anything is better than nothing.

I also have a 78 CB550K, when I bought it it last year it had 1800 original miles on it. Exhaust pipes were fine, the mufflers didn't look too bad a little rusting on the outside-THE INSIDES WERE SHOT !!!

Be cautious when looking to buy a set of these pipes unless you definitely know the insides are good or else you are throwing your money away

They rust from the inside out,

do yourself a favor if you are going to run the bike look for a Jardine 4 into 2 and then rejet
