wiring, help!
« on: August 01, 2011, 08:00:43 PM »
Hi all.  As I am a nubie to all things motorcycle, I have nothing but gratitude and respect for you SOHC devotees.

Okay, I am learning how to use a multimeter to get a bad wiring system going on a 1974 bc750.  The first problem I found was the main green ground wire was melted as was the one coming from the front of the bike when it splits into 2 or 3 wires--I think it turned to three, however one was unused.  Anyway they are were fried.  I checked the voltage on my batt--good at 12 v.  Then the two red wires which exit the selenoid (sp?) are both good and "hot" at 12v.  But one of the wires (the solid red one) goes to nothing(just dangles hot) while the red and white one has been rigged up to split off, one goes to the rectifyer and the other all the way to the fuse box.

 My connection starts to fail here...the bottom fuse (5a) (main?) has power (12v)at all four points (entry adn exit) the other two get no reading.   Then up where the switch or connecter that connects to the ignition I have power except the brown adn maybe another.  When I turn the key nothing happens, no elect. AT ALL>  Question, the green that returns from the front of the bike, can I just ground that anywhere, or does it need to be grounded at the bottom of the rectifyer?  The voltage regulator ground, and the rectifier ground both were split off the green coming from the front of bike, which is exactly where my melting occurred.
I also didn't get any volts comming out of the yellow and red on the selenoid, is this normal?

I can send pics

Thanks in advance guys!

Your Main fuse is the only fuse with power to it with the ignition off.... normal. With the ign. 'on' then the headlight and taillight fuses show + voltage.
The very first thing to do is to shine-up that fuseholder.Shine all the clips and carefully squeeze them together so as they grip each fuse tightly.......... when you switch-on the ign. right now the load of the ign. and h/light just causes the fuse connection to fail, that's all..... a lot of folks look at the fuses and don't believe that it's a problem 'cos it looks o.k............. not so !!!
Good luck.
BTW.... Main =15A
Headlight = 7A
Taillight = 5A.
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,
If your sure it's an ignition problem; it's carbs....

thanks for the reply spanner.  My main (middle) fuse has been rigged with a plastic tube fuse connecter.  the plastic is worn out so that it doesnt clip together anymore, so I will either replace it or could I fix it to where I use a blade fuse?
