Removing petcock Sediment Bowl
« on: August 02, 2011, 06:05:16 AM »
Anybody have a sure fire way to remove the Bowl off a 1974 CB750 petcock that has been sitting for many years.  The threads have probably grown together, as the carb bowls were full of white crystal sediment that was difficult to remove.  I assume the petcock is the same.  Need to derust the gas tank, and fix a leak in it.  Just got this bike and it is in need of much tlc, but couldn't resist the chance at a new project!  I've used the search here, but no joy on this proceedure.  I'm sure I'm not the only one who has come across this problem.  Any solution to the problem?  I'm used to British bikes, so unfamiliar with Hondas, this is my first one.

The bowl will have to come off before you can get to the two screws that hold the petcock on.By the way those two screws can also be troublesome if sitting for long periods, rust etc.,I use a good fitting impact bit on an impact wrench so I can get a good maximum grip and push. As for the bowl I would start first with some penetrant and heating it up with a heat gun well-no gas in tank of course. The heat gun will melt any gas tar, help penetrant absorb and swell metal etc. Make sure whatever socket etc you use fits well on the nut flange as they do round off easily.
