Brainhail ... a stupid idea... or brilliant! (not)
« on: August 02, 2011, 05:27:28 PM »
Thinking about exhaust sounds ...
I like the sound of my Hooker headers but what about this idea.

Put an iris something like this on the end of your muffler...

and make it active (cables, servos, ?) so that it opens up with the throttle position or the engine rpms?

It'd sound really cool I think ... like Peter Framptons guitar in "Do You Feel Like We Do" sorta..  ::)

The little bit of Internet mentions that I found discuss it for ... dynamic backpressure (for lack of a better pair of words) for increasing performance..

Brilliant!  8)
Stupid..  :o

It would be a unique sound I think. That's really what I'm looking for.

Ever heard an exhaust like that?

I saw the Gatling Gun exhaust and that's kind of cool .. like spinners on Hummers  :P
Great for someone elses ride.

Vince

I think it’s an awesome idea, but I would probably use the adjustable aperture like header block off plates. Open it up for those hot race days and close it down when cruzin the hood.

Great idea, but Yamaha (among others) have been using that idea  for decades on motorcycles (EXUP) and outboard motors (YPVS). Honda has the HTEV, H-VIX and Suzuki has SET. Triumph also uses a similar system but I'm not sure what it called.  Works well though when done right. I'd like to see your version in action if you ever build it!
