Timing Question
« on: August 04, 2011, 02:05:30 PM »
Clymers does not specify whether the bike should be warm or cold for timing.  I think the bike should be warmed up before adjusting the timing.  Please confirm.  Additionally, when setting the timing with a strobe light, can you adjust the baseplate while the engine is running like on a car?  Any help would be appreciated. First time tune up on a 1975 cb550.  Thx.

Timing isn't really affected by engine temp.  However, they usually idle better when warmed up.

If the base plate doesn't fit in the capture posts of the engine block tightly, then the whole plate will move in every direction when the hold down screws are loosened, as the point springs and cam push things around while running.

In the FAQ, you will find a shim procedure to keep the plate stable during timing.
