Jointing Compund Removal

Has any body used a solvent to remove the excess jointing compound from the crankcases without damaging the paint, if you have what is it?
 It’s blue never sets and it sucks  :o

hi Dave, have you tried Acetone? available from a chemist shop.

beg to differ on that Sam, I have used Acetone to clean up all sorts off aluminium, however my plastic radio suffered when I knocked the bottle over  >:(

just read post again, he mentioned paint, ooops!

Cheers Mal I need a solvent that’s not harmful to paint I’m sure Acetone will lift it.  :o

Sam yes! but the bloody blue goo is a bummer I used the minimum  and it still oozed
 out it’s so close to my almost perfect paint work on the top case so I have to be careful what I remove the excess with……… I’m going to spray some surplus parts at the weekend and experiment if with some stuff…. I’ll be up for a pint soon even though I’ll have a blue stripe although I’m a red……. even if I can’t find a wipe off solvent.

If its dry try removing it with a plastic putty knife. Shouldn't harm the paint that way.  It's worth a shot

Bob, I was thinking along the same lines when I seen where it lay.  My wife will only let me use the basement "wreck room" ;D

Hey Bob and James, Over the Years I have built numerous bikes in my pad and it's a first floor flat. :o :o :o

The most I have had in there at one time was three.

In all that time, my wife has not said a word.

Saying that, I have'nt seen her for twenty years.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

You're a funny bastard Sam. Did I mention I'll be there next week?? I've use everything from MEK to brake cleaner to get stuff off. Brake cleaner or MEK gets Hylomar off etc.

A solvent agression ladder.  For unknown surfaces, start at the top (least aggressive) and work toward the bottom.
 Test in an inconpicuous area first, of course.

Water
soap & water
alcohol (denatured)
Naptha (lighter fluid)
Mineral spirits
Diesel fuel
Gasoline
MEK  Methyl Ethel Ketone
Lacquer thinner
Acetone
Methyl Ethyl Chloride  (paint stripper)

Sometimes, it helps if you know what the paint composition is, as different paints have different sensitivities to solvent attack.
Catalysed paints are usually more resistant thing down the ladder than simple solids paints.

Twiittering...hmmm. Not knowing what that is BUT I'm sure I've succumbed to it at one point (pint) or another. I'll be there in a year or so with me oldest boy. Christ it takes 6 months to get a Visa here now! We'll meet sir....I promise that and you know I don't fall on my word. No pints now....work in the AM  ;D

Make sure you let me know when, then I can take time off work if I am still working.

Don't go booking hotels, you can both stay with me, I only charge $300 a night ;D

My freshly painted and jointing compound free cases and $18.50 pistons and barrels……get the Ale in Sam, I’ll be up for a pint soon, once I stop bouncing off the walls.
