k&n install and fork tube picture
« on: May 03, 2006, 11:19:14 AM »
Hi,

I want to install k&n's on my 73 cb750.  I know all about rejetting and all that, but my main concern is that the carbs will be solely hanging off the intake rubbers... currently the carbs are supported at both ends, since the airbox is attached to the frame.  I seached the previous posts and did find anyone mentioning this.  I'd hate to have my carbs fall off after going over a big bump...   :D  Should I worry about this?  I'm pretty handy and would be able to make a nice bracket if necessary.

Secondly, I have a big pit in my fork tube located right below the fork seal.  So as I ride around the fork oil slowly gets pumped out.  My local bike wrecker says he has lots of honda fork tubes, but most are unlabeled.  I know the OD (I think I measured it at 34.75mm), but I don't really think I'd be able to identify it any further than that with out removing my own fork tube.  Could someone give me some solid data (like length, location of holes) or even post a photo of one of these fork tubes so that I can be sure I get the right one.

Thanks a ton,
Keddie

I am currently running V-Stacks on my carbs, with no issues what so ever.
The carbs just kinda "hang" there. That was the way I bought the bike, and have had no issues.

Honda fork legs are 35mm I believe...

that's a little bit of an over generalization.

CB750 forks tubes are 35mm OD.

but a GL1000 is 37mm, so they aren't all the same.

He said he has a 1973 cb750, So I said his legs should be 35mm.
I guess I should of been more clear, which I apoligize 4  ::)

Whenever the "unsupported carbs" issue crops up, there always seems to be a lot of "I heard..." and "A friend of mine saw..."

But never any "It happened to me and here are the pictures".

Of course, knowing this place, someone's about to show us the pictures.  :D

carbs dont fall off but they do sag and cause mixture problems. easy fix is to mount a short spring to frame to allow them to move but not 'droop'

Hey Keddie,

Before you install pods you may want to search the threads.  That swap has been beaten to death numerous times.  Don't ditch your airbox yet because all around performance, torque and consistent running conditions are superior with the airbox.  Those running modified engines seem to like pods better though.  I found my bike only ran OK wide open with my legs hugging the side covers.  If you drop a knee you will lean out the outer cylinders.  Still if you must see for yourself be prepared to rejet and spring for true K&N pods not cheap spin offs.

As for the bracket, I say build it. Extra support for the carbs is never a bad thing. Especially, if you can make a bracket that looks A.) Really Good, or B.) Can hardly be seen. You might end up witha  couple of orders off this board if you do a good job.

i agree with the air box theory, i have been runnin pods for about 6 months, i think that it ran better with the air box on, and was alot more user friendly.... but the pods are on, and they are happy hangin in the breeze... BTW have a 77 F1...peace

my main concern is that the carbs will be solely hanging off the intake rubbers... currently the carbs are supported at both ends, since the airbox is attached to the frame.

I would expect that the age of the carb to intake couplers is a factor here.  They get hard with age and heat and are less likely to allow much carb motion in such a state.  If, however, you had brand new, or very supple intake couplers, a rear brace will prevent them from sagging and wobbling.

You could always take some zip ties and zip them around the 2 center carbs and swing it over the frame.  You'ld probably never see them unless looking.

Zip-ties solve most, if not all of the worlds problems....
