'74 CB550 resistor caps
« on: August 05, 2011, 06:15:51 PM »
I'm getting down to the final stages of a long drawn out restoration of my '74 550 (looking GOOD and getting very close to running good as well). I want to fine tune the ignition before I get into the carbs, and I am looking to install new resistor caps to replace the 37 yr. old originals. Is 5K ohms the correct choice? If so it would be the NGK XD05F (102 degrees/ 5K ohms). Correct???

All my Cb550s had 10K caps on them originally.  I don't know if you can get those anymore, though.  5 k might be all you can get.
The caps had two different angles two were X and two were V, if I recall an earlier thread correctly.
I assume you have the NGK plug cap chart.

Yes, I have seen the NGK plug cap chart. I don't see a 10K cap listed, so this may be a problem. I do think you are probably right about 10K being the stock plug caps- I recall seeing that somewhere online in the past. What happens if I were to try to run the 5K caps???

It's a little harder on point contacts and condensers, taxes them a bit more as the secondary current is increased.  If they are hardy parts, they'll survive.  But, you may have to replace them more frequently.

I assume you have the Cb550 stock coils?

Stock coils, true. One (1,4) I replaced about 15 yrs. ago when OEM replacements were still available. The other (2,3) is as old as the bike but it seems to be able to generate a decent spark. The bike runs pretty well on starter fluid and all pipes seem to get equally hot.
I guess Ill start looking around for 10K caps. thanks.
