Bad ground? If so, where does it ground to the chassis?
« on: August 07, 2011, 03:01:03 PM »
Ok so I'm getting frustrated with my '75 CB400F. She's a bit ratty but oodles of fun when she's running. However she hasn't been running for a few months because of some electrical issue. She went from working 100%, to the electric start dimming the lights & heating up the main fuse, to no juice at all. My wiring looks to still be original (the colors appear to match everywhere) and it is all wrapped in electrical tape & heat shrink. Checking all the rub points I see no damage whatsoever and I'm thinking maybe a ground is corroded/loose, but for the life of me I cannot find where the chassis ground is. Is it hidden within another component like the taillight assembly, etc.? I really do not want to cut off all that old tape/heat-shrink just to find the wires look great & I'm still F'ed when I could be cleaning/tightening one connection & riding away grinning like a fool.

Any help would be appreciated. I have an '03 R1 to ride in the meantime but I don't want my little bike to rot in the garage. Thanks!

Pull out that fuse (and maybe the fuseholder) and clean the contacts for it with a metal wire brush. The contacts are probably corroded, making the fuse heat up, which can also make the fuse melt.

If the metal brush doesn't get it close enough, I have a replacement fuseblock for those bikes, which uses ATC blade fuses instead. PM me if interested.  ;)
