DIY fiberglass seat question
« on: August 07, 2011, 07:05:29 PM »
So my first seat build and also my first time glassing anything and I have a quick question:
I got the hang of it now but at first it was a little shaky (this stuff is about as fun as a swift kick to the groin  :D) so I have a couple undesired bumps and/or thicker spots. So my question is should I add some short strand fiberglass filler now and add my final layer over that? Or just add the last layer and fix any imperfections at the end?
I can't post any pictures right now but don't worry I've been documenting this disaster the whole way lol - you'll get a build thread later!
Thanks,
Adam

Address only air bubbles between layers, if you have air gaps grind out the high spot over the bubble and lay your next layer. don't add short strand until you're finished with layers....smooth it out at the very end.

I left my camera at work today but ill take a couple more update pics tmrw night and post some pics.
I took off some high/uneven spots today and added a layer of woven fabric (previous layers were mat). Its looking better than anticipated now but its going to take a lot of filler/bondo yet. Im happy with it so far - it should come out as planned in a couple days :)

I usually go the other way 'round.....I start with some woven FG fabric and finish off with a couple layers of chopped strand matt. Once dry I go over the whole thing with 36grit sandpaper on a durablock to buzz it down close to proper shape, then short-strand bondo on top and smooth that with 80 grit, then 220, then filler prime and paint.

+1 Although the guys who are really REALLY good at it use the woven fabric last in order to almost not need to paint it because of its natural beauty.
