the first thing i would do is download the manual for the bike from this site the second thing i would do is replace the condensers they are about 8.00 each cheap then i would open all the drains on the float bowls let them drain on a white rag or towel if they are brown or goopy then clean out the bowls and put a fuel filter on and you have to remove the petcock from the tank to get to the tank fuel filter (drain the gas first) if you still have one I have had a 550 for 27 years and have seen it all after all that i would check the valve lash but i really think your problem is the condensers get that manual if you have trouble pm me I am Danno I will help you and it sounds like you need to adjust your timing chain tension but that won't cause this problem
