A bad starter button wouldn't dim the head lights it just wouldn't do anything. Try the solenoid trick as phil suggested but I think you have a bad starter. Don't try and connect it too long you might start melting wires or other important electrical components.

On the F the headlight should go out when you hit the starter button.  Check for voltage on the yellow/red wire on the solenoid when the button is pushed.  Try the jumping as fatkid mentions to eliminate/confirm the starter as the problem.  After that it's either the solenoid or the starter switch.

Well, I just looked at the avatar.  It's not THAT hard to figure out. ;D

Don't know if I have posted this on your thread and maybe you have it but here is a nice wire diagram for you in two parts.

Many of us have more than one sohc4.  IMO, it's usually best not to start answering a question until you know what bike the question is about because misinformation and confusion could result.

By your description -- what's happening is half of what should be happening. Your headlight should go dim when you press the button, but your starter should also start to turn.

If the starter turns when you jump the posts of the solenoid, then you should  suspect the button and do tests to confirm whether it's working or not.

If it doesn't turn when you jump the solenoid, and your battery is fully charged, then you should suspect the wires to the starter or the starter itself.

I believe they added a relay or something that shuts the light down while cranking it over so as to not run the battery down as much. I by passed it on my bike. Pretty sure they did this starting in 75' so that would include all the F's.

No relay, just a multi-pole switch that feeds power to the headlight when "not pushed" or feeds power to the solenoid "when pushed".  Hondaman describes a replacement system that uses a relay if you don't want to pony up the $100 for a new right side control.  I think one of the reasons behind his mod was the starter switch will last much longer without having to run the headlight current through it.

Awww....I see. The reason mine is bypassed is because I'm running Yami 650 controls. That makes sense about not running the headlight load through the switch. No wonder so many of them are burned up.
