How much would you pay for a 1980 750 SS with 20k Miles,
« on: August 03, 2011, 09:58:25 AM »
A good friend of mine bought the bike off of an older guy a few years back. He got it for real cheap, but I know he's put money into it.
He's willing to sell it to me, and I could make payments, but I'm a bit reluctant.

It's always been garaged.

I'm just wondering how much would savy individuals like yourselves pay for it?

I would take it off his hands if he paid me $250US.

Isn't an 80SS a DOHC? Is that what you want?  If so I don't think they bring much. And remember its not the milege as much as the overall age, when its over 10 years, it might as well be 100. All the rubber bits are hard, body pieces are brittle,  the cables are corroded intenally, the wiring is all hard and corroded, the tires are likely too old (if over 6-8 years) the brake pads are hard and maybe glaxed, etc.

Garaging helps, at least the paint woon't be faded. But age is age. Unless the garage was temp controlled, it still went thru condensation cycles that muck up the fork oil, shock oil, engine oil.  I certainly woldn't make payments on it. Buy something modern with borrowed money.

I bought a scooter from a friend. I took over eight months to pay him $600 (which is ridiculous on my part) and if it ever blows up I am going to #$%* down his neck!

 ;D ;)

Thats what I was thinking too.

It is a DOHC. Its not really what I want since I'm in the long process of fixing up my bike. Making payments would take away from the build.

He owns a few BMW's  and he had replaced all the rubbers, and new tires. He's gone through the carbs.

He had let me use it when my bike first broke down 2 summers ago. I used it as a daily rider for about a month. Plus we went out of town a few times.

I'm gonna have to pass. Its not the bike I want. I want to get my F2 back in shape.

Thanks for the reality check.

+1

When I was 19 I sold my old Buick Lesabre to my best friend since I was 12. I sold it for $1600 and let him give me $1000 since we worked together. I wound up chasing him down for 6 months for the last $400 and I never wound up getting it back. He gave me the car back in way worse condition and I would up junking it for $300.

I lost $100 and a good friend. NEVER AGAIN!

I have owned plenty of dual cam superports. They are the natural evolution of the cb750 SOHC, and certainly feel more refined. Despite being the sporty model they are as big as a freight train and stable as hell at 125mph, more suited to being a GT machine or regular two up mount.

If the bike runs excellent and is in excellent shape then I could see him asking $1500 for it, less if not in such great shape.

They have their own forum at www.cb1100f.net.

Three things to look for:
Starter clutches loosen up.
Cam chain tension is super important so a noisy cam chain is worrisome.
Reg/rect go bad all the time.

So, if the bike starts normally, idles quietly, and charges the battery then you are in good shape.

Don't let the guys who have never owned one talk you out of it. They are great bikes in their own right.

Thanks Geeto,

I'm sure they have a following, just like other bikes. I appreciate your input.

Eventually the bike falls into the category of something I want, but don't need.

If you look at it with a wide enough scope motorcycles in general fall into the category of stuff you want but don't need.

I have owned each variant of the supersport: 750f, 900f, 1100f and the one I liked the most was the 900f. I would buy a 750f if it was too good a deal to pass up but I would buy a 900f all day long, the bike just works well.

But the bike has to speak to you, and I get this one isn't. Hopefully it hasn't colored your impression of them to the point you wouldn't look at another one.
